to piggyback on this, Catus Magus is made with an insanely small crew (basically 1 person in each role) with everything geared towards max efficiency. each episode only takes a few weeks max to make, from start to finish. if the kickstarter succeeds, you'll see finished episodes roll out quickly!

that hit home for 2 reasons: 1) yaron spent his whole career boarding + directing on those shows (trolls, loud house) and they're his favorite genre + what inspired him 2) my youngest sister was an ipad kid in that age range who watched a ton of terrible "kid's" content on youtube

like, she would play roblox while playing repeats of the same reaction vids on the TV and barely paying attention. one day, yaron got annoyed and put on cuphead and she was way more engaged with it 🥺 but it was nice to see that the extra effort put into animation for kids still makes a difference

another fun fact, yaron said he made the show because he "likes cats and wizards" but he did not like cats until I convinced him to adopt moomy off the street, which included me crying 😂 now he's obsessed w cats so you could say catus magus wouldn't exist without me and moomy LMAO

one thing that inspired yaron was the fact that shows for the 8-12 demographic (i forget the exact age range that's official but you get me) are starting to disappear since most kids are just watching stuff on youtube and their parents don't wanna pay for shows anymore 😭

A while back, Jake from @studioursa.bsky.social was meeting up with Yaron and said he was starting an indie animation studio and asked if he had any show ideas. Yaron said yes (he didn't) and went home and basically came up with the entire catus magus pitch that night 😂 it's pretty close to final!

fun fact, apprentice is very loosely inspired by moomy (minus the patterns, for simplicity and also bc black cats = magic) no, he's never seen momo (the google doodle cat), that was a coincidence 😭

the show's inspired by old CN classics like dexter's lab, chowder, etc. which are insanely efficient, and that stylistically adds charm to the show. a lot of beautiful indies are made by artists and for artists, but run off of an unsustainable long-term model when it comes to money and labor

some of these efficient decisions include having no feet (so no walk cycles), short episodes (1-2 minutes long), lots of background re-uses, and using the fewest animated frames as possible. the whole thing is even animated in storyboard pro 😂 though we'd like to have rigs for season 2!

Been watching the bear and i get that carmen is supposed to be flawed and unlikable at times but I've just been like "he's just like me fr" 😅 all of his flaws hit home for me, especially when i was younger

This is definitely my favorite show that's come out in the past decade though, it's just stylistically so unique and confident. 👨‍🍳👌 it breaks so many "rules" in a really refreshing way

Also is it messed up that i watched the whole show and still think "that looks kinda fun"? Especially the second to last ep and seeing all the characters have to improv 😂 i never got stressed when i worked at a print shop no matter how busy or hectic it got. I thought it was fun and challenging lol
