"everyone in the middle ages believed in astrology and the stars having a direct impact on outcomes on earth" sounds like wacky superstitition to us today but i think would seem much more intuitive as a belief if you could see the sky like they got to see it.

Wrote some stuff. Read to the end for my first f-bomb on the company account in 6½ years

It’s taken a while to put into words what I find so distasteful about AI in type design (even — especially — the ‘boring parts’). It’s not the threat of being put out of a job. Some thoughts: mass-driver.com/article/from...

watching WWDC against my better judgement and it's amazing that even Apple's AI bullshit boils down to "hey siri do my parenting for me" or "hey siri, i don't want to look at the texts i had with my wife and remember all the fun little interactions we have just pull this one thing out of it for me"

People love historical what if scenarios. What if JFK was never assassinated? What if the Nazis won in WW2? A scenario I never see discussed is what if the aids crisis didnt decimate the gay men of America in the 80s-90s? Its easy to forget 1 in 15 gay boomer men died. An estimated 300,000 deaths-

Most text rendering middleware for games only supports `kern` table kerning, but most fonts only ship with GPOS kerning data, so text can be badly spaced even if the same font looks fine outside the game (This might be my single biggest criticism of Marathon, the screen says ‘EXFIL TRA TED’)

dyslexia-friendly/‘hyperlegible’ fonts are a marketing gimmick, not a meaningful solution for accessibility

What's something that experts/practitioners in your field universally agree upon, but that remains a "hot take" among the general public?

New release: MD UI. The International Typographic Style projected one step into the future. UI is a neo-grotesque tuned for maximum performance across all scales; a typeface that augments the function of a timeless form. Available today in 48 styles. mass-driver.com/typefaces/md...

my brain: we need to focus. Lock in. Deadline tomorrow, lots of work still needs to be done. It’s very important we focus, otherwise we won’t finish everything in time. also my brain: low poly rat challenge. Make a low poly rat right now

update: the peach chipotle salsa (as it ended up being) has mellowed very well. I made myself a sandwich with most of what was left over & a very blue Montgomery cheddar. 11/10

threw together what i thought would be a low-effort imitation of a peach habanero salsa I vaguely remember having about a month ago, half the ingredients substituted (including the habaneros) Reader, it is one of the best things i have ever made

begging the people who make toasters and the people who make washing machines to talk to each other about how long a minute is

it’s 2026 and people are still making websites with that stupid laggy smooth-scrolling that feels like trying to run underwater

starting to feel much more comfortable programming complex systems. Had an idea yesterday for a kind of Dishonored-style character controller based on parallel state machines #screenshotsaturday #gamedev

I spent over a year designing this font license (& almost 5 years refining it), with gamedev as a primary use case. Just about every indie foundry I know is actively trying to improve this stuff, despite Monotype repeatedly setting the font industry’s collective goodwill on fire ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Mass-Driver@mass-driver.com

For any game developers* caught by the Monotype/Fontworks price hikes: - you can use our fonts for video games - there are no usage caps or renewal fees - unrestricted trial fonts for in-engine testing - smaller dev teams pay less. mass-driver.com *Extended Latin support, but not Japanese, sorry!

things I have caught myself saying in the last ~24 hours: “I’m gonna play about an hour of dwarf fortress and then I’ll go to the club” “please can you remove the zombie blood from the coat rack” “we’re out of mandarin campari sorbet. It’s the end of an era”

you can just claim any font is better for dyslexia. no one checks. I think we should all agree the best one is Zapfino and be done with it

In high school I wanted to know how fonts get made and no one knew. At university I wanted to know how fonts get made and they told me to go to The Hague and speak to a man named Erik. In The Hague they told me the basics, and I realised ‘how fonts get made’ is gonna take a lifetime to figure out

What’s the lore behind choosing your career path ?

The moving finger writes; and, having writ, Moves on — the AI only helps a bit. Just let me know if you have any Q’s, Or if I can adjust the vibe of it.

found some astonishingly cheap pineapple quinces this morning, so today I have been making quince cheese. Remarkable how much this has lifted my mood

thinking about UI. I don’t love the big sidebars & high information density of a lot of roguelikes — trying to come up with something that’s minimal but still shows everything you’d regularly need #gamedev #screenshotsaturday #godot

implemented an action log & connected up the health bar. I don’t want to go overboard with text effects, but: - combat actions are colour coded - more important actions (like attacks) are brighter than others (like harvesting) - older messages are dimmed (also health bar lag)

local craft supply store’s incredible new loyalty scheme: every €5 you spend earns you a sticker, and when you collect 64 (!) stickers, you give them your full name, address, email and phone number, and they give you a one-time €10 discount

Made some sound effects for footsteps & potions. my first serious attempt at sound design, feedback is very welcome (Combat sounds are not mine, included so bsky compression doesn’t crush the volume) #gamedev #godot #screenshotsaturday

it’s pretty subtle, but I tried recording some of my own sound effects for the UI. (combat audio is placeholder/not mine) #gamedev #godot

Added some (extremely placeholder) sound effects to the melee combat and it’s starting to feel very satisfying. Might go ahead and add sounds to everything #gamedev
