It’s taken a while to put into words what I find so distasteful about AI in type design (even — especially — the ‘boring parts’). It’s not the threat of being put out of a job. Some thoughts: mass-driver.com/article/from...

Update: MD Thermochrome version 0.5 is out today! This update adds 19 new icons, 14 new currency symbols, and support for the Latin M character set (430+ languages). futurefonts.com/mass-driver/...
Type Foundry Directory (typefoundry.directory) is one of the best resources out there for finding independent type designers & foundries. This month, not just the nameplate but the entire site is set in our latest typeface, MD UI — there’s no better specimen than a real-world use case.

NEW: MD UI from @mass-driver.com is a typeface for interfacing, optimised for word- and sentence-level performance, with an appearance that doesn’t try to be neutral, but doesn’t surprise or distract. Available in three optical sizes: MD UI, MD UI XS, and MD UI XL. fontstand.com/fonts?search...
I’m grateful to Koos (www.koosbreen.com) for proactively looking for type made by LGBTQ designers based in the Netherlands, and beyond proud to have played a small role in this immensely meaningful project

New release: MD UI. The International Typographic Style projected one step into the future. UI is a neo-grotesque tuned for maximum performance across all scales; a typeface that augments the function of a timeless form. Available today in 48 styles. mass-driver.com/typefaces/md...
In development since 2020, MD UI was designed alongside our existing release, MD IO. They’re distinct but closely related typefaces, with a shared set of vertical proportions and weights. Read more about the design process: mass-driver.com/article/md-u...
MD UI is also available on @fontstand.com — you can use the fonts commercially from just €5/month (and after 12 months, they become yours to keep). fontstand.com/foundries/ma...
Super nice deep-dive into MD UI here from @jectives.com, comparing it with some much more famous neo-grotesque typefaces. Thanks Curtis! www.youtube.com/live/tm6XDgz...
First use of MD UI in the wild! And a huge shoutout to Jack for his advice and expertise on the project — he helped organise half a decade of tangled thoughts about the typeface into a clear message we could use to actually describe it
Rolling out my new and improved homepage featuring (the first ever?) web use of @mass-driver.com's MD UI jackis.online
Have you used any of our fonts in a live project? If you’re able to share an image or two (or better yet, submit a @fontsinuse.com post!), I’d love to hear what you worked on, and potentially feature it on the next version of our website

Using a great typeface is like cheating at design because your work instantly gets so much better. After years of mucking, we started using MD System in a prototype. Seeing what the tool *could* look like was a huge motivation to finally make it happen. Once we saw it, we couldn't wait to build it.
When you design a typeface, there’s always a feeling of “I hope someone does X with it”. For MD System, @fathom.info’s Rowboat is cooler than even my most optimistic goals:

21,689 rows of film data (100 MB file!) and filtering by Director instantaneously on hover. All in the browser, no roundtrip to a server. Just insane what we can do here: rowboat.net/f/7vb8dx84 (I'm actually moving slower in the first half to make it less confusing—second half is actual speed.)

@mass-driver.com has a modern revival of MICR-ish typefaces: polychrome.mass-driver.com #typography
I've never heard of this or of them, but what a fucking brilliant typeface. Very Pearl & Dean
For any game developers* caught by the Monotype/Fontworks price hikes: - you can use our fonts for video games - there are no usage caps or renewal fees - unrestricted trial fonts for in-engine testing - smaller dev teams pay less. mass-driver.com *Extended Latin support, but not Japanese, sorry!

The v0.4 update for MD Thermochrome is finally ready, and it’ll ship later today! This version of the typeface includes 100+ new icons for UI design, wayfinding, and more. There’s a few more hours to get it at the current price, with lifetime updates included: www.futurefonts.com/mass-driver/...
These icons have been a surprisingly common request, and, less surprisingly, a tricky challenge. The workflow I came up with involves sketching using rectangular pixels in @aseprite.org, and some custom tooling in @glyphsapp.com to snap everything to the typeface’s grid.
A small update: if you’re buying fonts via our website, there’s now an option to apply a 50% student discount without needing to contact us. (You can always use our trial fonts in class without paying anything — this is only for commercial projects, published websites, etc.) mass-driver.com

For years, @matthewsmith.website’s typefoundry.directory has been my favourite place to discover new, independent type foundries. This summer Matthew released a huge update to the site, and also (finally!) let me support his efforts with a sponsorship — this month, the nameplate is set in MD Lórien
Happy to have been able to contribute some thoughts to @goodspeed.bsky.social’s latest piece for @its-nice-that.bsky.social. It’s great to see an article on design ethics consider type and UX, which generally don’t follow the typical client–agency model. www.itsnicethat.com/features/is-...
About a month ago this arrived at the studio, and I *adore* it. Long Way Home is a book on the work of Belarusian artist Masha Maroz. Its titles are set in MD Thermochrome, which doesn’t (yet) support Cyrillic — so the designers made their own. Via @fontsinuse.com: fontsinuse.com/uses/69970/l...
Designed by Ihar Yukhnevich and Masha Maroz. (I’m hugely grateful to Ihar for sending me a copy — getting to see how people use my fonts is pure joy, and this was clearly made with so much care and effort) Typeface (WIP): www.futurefonts.com/mass-driver/...

Maybe the single best thing about type design is getting to see my fonts used really well (by people with far better graphic design skills than me). Case in point: Aaron Parks’ new album, Little Big III, with cover art set in my typeface MD Nichrome. Designed by Maria Jarzyna.

MD Thermochrome v0.3 is now available! This update adds 33 new styles, for a total of 40 — including a new Medium weight and 4 sets of italics. (Also included are arrows, super & subscript, and a fractions OpenType feature) www.future-fonts.com/mass-driver/...
The next update to MD Thermochrome will be out tomorrow, adding 33 (!) new styles: a new Medium weight, plus 4 sets of italics. As always with Future Fonts releases, the price will increase for new buyers, but existing customers get all updates for free www.future-fonts.com/mass-driver/...
What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders? Fonts regularly take multiple years to make, and developing a small typeface family can easily cost $50k.
What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders? Despite the technological revolution the book business is healthy and generally stable. People still buy A LOT of books.
The type distributor (and organiser of my favourite typography conference), @fontstand.com, is restructuring into a cooperative. It’s hard to overstate how valuable this could be, for foundries, customers, and the health of the whole industry. A font platform owned by independent foundries!
Nevertheless, there are still a lot of questions about exactly how the new model will work — people care a lot about where (and how) they get their fonts. Reader, just this once, I would ask you to complete a survey. fontstand.com/survey (~15 mins)
