The original thread commented on how much effort went into managing Churchill, and while Churchill certainly had many and serious flaws, just the fact that he himself recognised he wasn't flawless and could be managed raises him above quite a few of the political leaders of his day ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯

John Bull@garius.eurosky.social

Churchill + Attlee was an incredible leadership combo. They complimented each other's wartine strengths and weaknesses, and both were self-aware enough to know it. THAT was what made the National Government work.

Do you know who was the British prime minister that declared war on Germany in 1939, and sent troops over to the continent? Neville "Peace in our time" Chamberlain. You don't need a Churchill to get upset about an invader, not to mention the reaction if it is your country that gets bombed.

European leadership is very weak and compromised. Do you think that Schroeder would be more like Churchill or more like Lord Hee Haw?

I'm a great admirer of Kasparov, but this is just poor analysis. Are there anything indicating that other European countries would be weaker than Ukraine? Historically, attacking cities have rarely broken the spirit of the population or the leadership - and this includes in Europe.

Natalka@natalkakyiv.bsky.social

‼️ Some brutal truth 🔽 “I want to see which European capital could withstand just one drone attack. They’ll run away, shit themselves — pardon my language — and surrender.”.” — Garry Kasparov

I know some European countries score low on "would you want your country to continue fighting in the face of an attack where outcome is uncertain?", but to an extent that is what people say in peace, and if actually attacked the "let's draft our youth to beat the barbarians"-spirit tend to kick in.

Like, what were the numbers in Ukraine in 2013 (or 2021, for the matter)? The danger is Putin has done that mistake before, and it is part of a longer line of Russia/Soviet (and other major powers) believing people won't fight back when faced with huge firepower, so he might do it again.

Nice reporting on our study 👍

The second part is straight up false. Russian hybrid attacks have already cost civilian lives, and endangered several more. Most famously the Skripal poisoning in Salisbury, which led to the death of Dawn Sturgess.

Did any journalist ask him to clarify what would be "very dangerous", considering there have been a number of such incidents during and after the Cold War, without major escalations?

Efterlysning bland alla snälla nördar: är du eller känner du någon som kan textil- eller industri-historia och skulle kunna faktakolla en text om tygfabrik på tidigt 1900-tal? Sprid så blir jag glad! ❤️

Okay, I need some help from the nerds. My mom's father, my Poppy, was a pilot who flew P-47s in the Italian Campaign during WWII. I don't want to post on Reddit but *can you recommend a book* that takes a deep dive into P-47s in the Italian Campaign; squadrons, engagements, combat & Corsica?

"Flying wings are boring, let's do flying bodies instead" - some engineer somewhere who had some kind of a quarrel with Northrop, probably 😜

I argue that we do have options for how to meet Russian aggressive attacks, and until we actually do something, regardless of any political statements about attacks being "unacceptable", we are in fact accepting them. By the way, here's a picture of Reagan being briefed by on El Dorado Canyon.

What does it mean when we say NATO would reinforce the Nordics in case of war? How many, how would they come, and crucially, do we have the transport infrastructure? I've had the opportunity to together with our team talk to a lot of knowledgeable people to find the answer.

Far be it from me to say that not cooperating with authorities always means you did the crime, but one could imagine the time to present the "comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence" was during the investigation they instead made "concentrated efforts to stop and frustrate" ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯

Great for Finland, but to be completely honest my selfish view is that more precipitation in May and less during my vacation in July would have been nice 😅

Mika Rantanen@mikarantane.bsky.social

Do you remember the drought affecting Finland that received a lot of media attention? In early May, cumulative precipitation was record-low in Finland. Turns out that the summer and September were quite wet, and cumulative precipitation in Finland is now actually above average!

Back from Stockholm, where the firearm geeks might find it interesting to note that the guards at the palace were using some AK M4A (Swedish Colt M4A1, brought in as a stop-gap rifle) alongside the AK 5 (FN FNC).

As Denmark sends conscripts abroad, it’s time to repost my comment on the Finnish force structure which the politicians doesn’t seem to want to talk about. But, hey, it’s not like there are some worrying signs the resolve of our alliance might be about to be tested? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Mads Korsager@madskorsager.bsky.social

For the first time, Denmark will deploy conscripts to Latvia next year 🇩🇰🇱🇻 They will serve on NATO’s eastern flank as part of Multinational Division North. Latvia has also asked Denmark to extend its military presence at Ādaži as a deterrent against Russia. www.dr.dk/nyheder/udla...

It might sound a bit farcical, but politicians are people (and often people who went into politics to try to make the world a little bit better), so these kinds of dynamics shouldn't be underestimated (wherever they might lead).
