Just my silly lil thoughts, mostly about Star Trek. Pretty gay, pretty nerdy 🌈

"And we walk the Earth with love in our hearts. We extend it to others, and they extend their love to us. Embellishing both our lives, and that is beautiful. Somewhere out there, there is someone waiting for a new friend." 😭

Happy Saturday, your afternoon read is about letting friendships die and punching cops. buttondown.com/monteiro/arc...

Replying to @older.bsky.social

there was streaming before the big companies, and they criminalized it when it was free because it was unfair to artists, and now that it's for-profit it's legal and it's still fucking unfair to artists.

Everyone is so tired. Exhausted. And I'm talking to so many friends and colleagues who are hoping for a functional institutional power to come along and take care of them, take the annoying work and worry away. An employer, a publisher, a big funder, an elected leader, etc. I think it's just us.

This is part of a series of terrible arguments that people make that they think are real gotchas. Yesterday, someone said "I get why women would choose the bear, but then why haven't they? Why haven't all women walked into the woods?"

If the argument for women should know better than to go into a rape den like a frat house, explain to me why a rape house like a fraternity is allowed to exist at all.

If they make a DungeonCrawlerCarl game, they should just give it to Respawn Entertainment. I want a "pilot-inspired" Princess Donut hopping onto mech-tank Carl's shoulders with quippy dialogue and an emotional story. Just also make it an RPG.

Obviously I never want them to remake The Princess Bride, but if they did - have Pedro Pascal be Inigo Montoya, with Humperdink (Jonathan Bailey?) and the Count (Andrew Scott?) as not-so-secret lovers. For some reason I also see Zendaya and Tom Holland as Buttercup and Wesley?

I have come to accept and love my beautiful contradictions. Like how I hate seafood but love ceviche. Or how I love water and boats, but not a fan of the beach cuz of the waves. It's not all black and white, I'm a complicated mess.

I'm realizing part of the reason I love Octavia E. Butler is that she writes stories of how individuals shape and influence communities. She balances the community vibe with an individual's role within it. It's beautiful.

So venture capital really looks at the world and says "let's give millions of dollars to this mission-driven startup making ChatGPT-enabled dog toys" while not supporting corporate/billionaire tax policies to fund public transit, rent control, or universal healthcare?

What does the Milky Way look like from the side? Thanks to data from ESA’s Gaia mission, we now have a detailed map showing its thin, warped disk — home to our Sun and billions of stars. A stunning view of our galaxy’s true shape. Credit: ESA, Gaia, DPAC, Stefan Payne-Wardenaar

I think I've posted this before, but #LowerDecks really missed an opportunity to highlight the Starfleet Fashion Core - the folks responsible for coming up with whole new uniforms every 4 years or some shit. #StarTrek

I don't think I really understood the meme of "every white cis guy wants to do a podcast" until I, a white cis guy, started getting into weed and now thinks every idea I have deserves a platform.

Columbia: "We continue to be deeply concerned about Mahmoud Khalil and Mohsen Mahdawi" Also Columbia:

New — 51 days since the Trump administration detained Mahmoud Khalil and 2 weeks since it detained Mohsen Mahdawi, Columbia University administrators finally name the pair in an email just sent out to campus:

"Unlike other issues, Trump is polling OK on immigration" isn't a reason for Democrats to ignore that issue, but rather a reason for them to attack it head on. Public opinion can actually be moved, Democrats. And on this issue there's a lot to push back on.

This putrid human is celebrating the decimation of trans rights in the UK. She’s gloating because she helped fund it. She funded it thru money she makes off Harry Potter. She will continue to do this. It’s her “mission”. Supporting Harry Potter harms and causes death in my community. Factually.

The whole Blue Origin space thing is just another example of how wealth and celebrity detach people from the real world. It's giving "Imagine" during lockdown all over again. Symbolic gestures absent of transformative action are just exercises in egotism.

I’m going to pull my teeth out if the left tears itself apart over whether Pete or AOC would be a better candidate while Trump dismantles every single check on his power. Let’s have the debate while deep down adoring both of them as insanely smart, principled politicians that we are lucky to have.

I'm gonna need the discourse to change around Trump's actions. Like, we know most things he is doing are "obviously illegal," (re: homegrown deportations), so while pointing that out is important, what are the next steps? Like clearly our system isn't working, so what are our options now?
