This chart says a lot to me. One of them is that outside of the few people on Mastodon, using AI to write code isn't really a debate anyone else is having.

I don't buy the line that Ruby or Rails are particularly well suited to AI, and think you could easily argue the opposite. It feels like cope and marketing designed to maintain as much relevance as possible.

To be clear, Ruby is one of my favorite languages. I just feel that this attempt to rebrand as uniquely suited to AI is kind of silly. An LLM doesn't care about the beauty of the language and is probably hurt more than helped by metaprogramming tricks. AI would rather have types and a compiler.

Once I get good insurance again, I really need to see a sleep specialist. They've told me before I don't have sleep apnea, but I also know that this isn't normal. I'm tired all the time, but I'm never sleepy.

Cars should be programmed or otherwise made so they can't go over the speed limit. Some kind of temporary override for emergencies.

Took Link to the vet. Going to have to figure out how to get his teeth cleaned, which will be thousands of dollars. Hopefully he gets to keep a couple of them.

Poor Link. I love him so much. I want him to be healthy and happy. I don't know if I'd gotten him one more teeth cleaning if it would've made a difference with his predisposition, but I just wish I could've done something different here. I feel like a real piece of shit.

I was trying to get a look at my dog's teeth because I was thinking they need to get cleaned again when I start getting paid. He got frustrated, gave me a little nip and his canine came out. He doesn't seem bothered or uncomfortable, but I'm crying a lot.

Test drove a 2010 Ford. It seemed ok but I also feel like if I'm not 100% sure it's better to wait and find something I am sure about.

The way people talk about AI coding on Mastodon/Bluesky where they think they can ignore it or make a principled stand makes me feel like a lot of people must feel very secure in their job or have a lot of savings. Why should you care? Because it's your career and this is an unavoidable question?

I'm having an existential crisis over the idea that the things I thought mattered maybe don't anymore and I need to adapt. AI writes shitty code? People write shitty code. The AI code I see is as good or better than most human code.

Instead of financing a used car, I think I'm going to get something cheap, drive it for a year or two and then maybe upgrade when I can save the money to do it without taking on a car payment.

Don't folks get tired of backpedaling and being wrong about the future? Isn't that exhausting and demoralizing? Doesn't whiplash hurt?

A couple years ago a popular refrain was, "I'm going to get so much work fixing AI messes." The reality—anecdotally described here, and in that Bank of America story making the rounds—is that AI ended up giving humans so much work fixing human messes.

I think I want a hybrid sedan. It feels like the best compromise for me where I can get something used at a reasonable price which is also significantly greener than a gas car. I just don't see any electric vehicles which are an option for me.

Another interview that I think went well done! I think what I have learned is that you do need to do some LeetCode stuff, although really not that much, and make sure you are using your language enough to appear fluent in front of someone else.

The only thing stressing me out is that I have an offer with a deadline, so I'm going to need to email these other recruiters where I'm in the pipeline and be like, "I'm excited about the team. If they would like to move forward, here's my deadline, and I need to move with some urgency."

Got an offer today. That was really good. I also had an interview somewhere else that think went well. I expect one way or another next week this whole job search thing will be wrapped up.

I need a car. I know I want to get something used because I don't want to be in a situation paying $1000 a month again for a car plus insurance. Not totally sure where to start looking.

Is it basically always expected you are going to make a counteroffer for a job? Like, are you just leaving money on the table if you don't ask?

If the last time you tried using AI assisted coding was a year or two ago, you got some crazy results like inventing methods that don't exist, and decided it was a worthless slop machine… give it another look. It's come a long way in two years.

Do I have any friends who know a lot about widgets and maybe have also used foundation models that would be willing to read something for me?

I'm not going back to X. But Mastodon/Bluesky do absolutely suck for discussing anything other than technology or politics.

One of my little squirrel friends who hangs out on my fence got hit by a car in front of my house. I got him picked up and into a box so I could dispose of his remains. Poor guy.

Don't really know how to handle a system design interview where you draw boxes of things since my actual process is much more iterative and based on writing code and then figuring out where the abstractions are I can pull apart. Hopefully that came across 🤷‍♂️

I think that interview went well. The only thing I absolutely blanked on was how you write a custom view modifier, which was strange for me.

I've been ghosted one time after doing a take-home coding project. Luckily, it wasn't one of the jobs I was most interested in, but still, is that not the peak of disrespect to ask someone to do free labor and not even follow up?

Are you a professional programmer in a company who allows the use of AI tools but doesn't use them at all? How's that going?

Why has Omarchy received so much funding? What is it for? The Rails foundation runs on something like 1.5m/year and Omarchy has received ~$20m? Am I missing something? I honestly don't even understand what the hype is for this.
