Thanks, Jeff! It's not quite an apples to apples comparison for multiple reasons (ensemble underdispersion, mismatched baselines, etc.). But qualitatively, it is reasonable to interpret that the risk of an ARkHist-level event this year is at least 10x baseline, and quite possibly higher.

Seeing multiple reports of notable and even locally damaging coastal flooding ongoing already in parts of coastal SoCal. This could get significantly worse this weekend due to TS Rachel.

Update: The remnants of Hurricane Rachel, likely as a post-tropical (perhaps still tropical) storm, now appears likely to bring significant impacts to northern Baja CA, far S. California, AZ, and UT--mainly Sunday into Monday. [Brief thread]

We're getting a lot of questions about the reported plague case in Russia, and we understand why headlines about "the plague" are scary. Let's go through what we know, and what we don't. This deserves close attention, but the chance of it becoming a wider outbreak, let alone a pandemic, is very low.

No surprises for anyone living in SoCal, but the last couple of days have been very hot for Oct in most areas, with widespread 100F+ today even pretty close to coast. Quite a few daily records, and maybe a monthly record or two, broken--with scattered records elsewhere in West.

The East Pacific has been supercharged this #hurricane season, and is now in record ACE (Accumulated Cyclone Energy) territory. It is expected to stay busy the next couple of weeks. If it accumulates another 50-60 units, it will break the record set in 2018. My guess is it probably will. #elnino
