@ghildirthalen.bsky.social has been working for a while to figure out an easy solution for if the Dragon Age Keep goes offline for the last time and I offered to help figure out the playstation side, and good news! We're excited to announce that we did it!

In SILVER LORDS OF NAGASAKI, Timothy R. Romans reveals how pirates, merchants, and political ambitions shaped Japan’s place in a region where Europe, China, and Korea vied for influence during the Tokugawa period.

Ghent University members are asking for support, so its institution can investigate Cofnas as its regulations require, and because: "appeals to absolutist academic freedom as a guise for pursuing racist and pseudoscientific research threaten the integrity and credibility of research as a whole"

Pieter T. L. Beck@ptrbck.bsky.social

We have written a statement in support of Ghent Uni's decision to suspend Nathan Cofnas. We resist attempts to frame this as a punishment for "whistleblowing" or censorship of "controversial research". We invite all academics who share our views to sign our letter. forms.gle/qwN8xzEM5C7Q...

Here is Nathan Cofnas’s full suspension letter, which makes incredibly clear he was not suspended for whistleblowing.

roterote aka Hunter CG@roterote.bsky.social

Here is the full suspension letter from UGent that was sent to Nathan Cofnas, it shows ample reason for his suspension and potential termination. Including breach of contract, using the University of Ghent’s name and legitimacy to promote his racial supremacist views and causing reputational damage.

When Democrats participate in attacks on trans folks—from misgendering to entertaining the notion that there are “legitimate” concerns over trans equality and participation in society—they’re helping the right.

Had a delightful time chatting with @wiswell.bsky.social at Greedy Reads last night about The Dragon Has Some Complaints! Thanks everyone who joined us -- despite dire forecasts we did not get swept away by tornadoes (or eaten by dragons). Go read this book, it will fill you with joy!

"But that objection misses the point entirely. The point is... that there are some human functions for which computers ought not to be substituted. It has nothing to do with what computers can or cannot be made to do. Respect, understanding, and love are not technical problems.” ...

Joseph Weizenbaum's 1976 book, Computer Power and Human Reason, has long been out of print - used copies sell for hundreds of dollars. It's wild that this is not more widely available given how much his ideas still apply to the world we're in now. 🧵/

"Bear!" shouted Mr. Curry. "Bear, you've steered the wrong way!" "I'm sorry," said Paddington, fumbling with the ship's wheel. "It is rather difficult with paws." He threw a lever in case it would help. The ship accelerated. There was a mighty eddying and foaming in the noisome brine. 1/3

Quite by accident, Paddington drove his vessel head on against the pursuing jelly which rose above the unclean froth like the stern of a daemon galleon. The awful squid-head with writhing feelers came nearly up to the bowsprit of the sturdy yacht. 2/3

There was a bursting as of an exploding bladder, a slushy nastiness as of a cloven sunfish, a stench as of a thousand opened graves, and a sound that the chronicler would not put on paper. "Bears," thought Dread Cthulhu, sinking back to R'lyeh, "always land on their feet." 3/3?

I'm sorry, what? In writing my first monograph, I spent six weeks trying to track down a citation in TWO languages I didn't know. And good thing too, because the citation was wrong. That's scholarship. That's research. You know, the thing we're trained to do?!?

I write a monthly newsletter for my department, and almost every month I find incorrect citations. I remember wasting hours in grad school trying to track down a few citations that simply did not exist, though. "Have honest citations" shouldn't be revolutionary or controversial.

Particularly in the context of (appropriate) crackdowns on LLM-generated papers (e.g., on arXiv) and more and more tales of fabricated citations, two reminders: (1) LLMs do not "cite their sources" (2) Using an LLM to generate, complete, or fix LaTeX code can result in fabricated citations

I realized months too late that Groundhog's Day doesn't have any holiday songs (unless you count I Got You Babe) so I thought maybe we could take some Christmas songs and rework them? So far I've got one. On the first Day of Groundhog's my true love gave to me A partridge in a pear tree!
