Great news for Toronto! 15 elected candidates pledged to vote for a moratorium on AI data centres, a maximum temperature bylaw to protect renters, more trees and shade, cutting single-use plastics, and greener buildings. That’s a majority for these key environmental priorities. #topoli

We have a winner: Overall, 60% of Canadians indicated they want to prioritize clean energy compared to 18% who said the same of fossil fuels. Broken down further, 1/4 (26%) said Canada should focus mainly on clean energy, while 1/3 (34%) said "both, but lean more toward clean energy.”

So much of Canada’s oil and gas conversation makes NO sense. But WHY is that? Well thanks to a WILD new report from Greenpeace Canada, the network of murky figures muddying these conversations about energy are coming into view:

Boom going bust? According to the provincial electricity system operator, Alberta alone has 44 data centre proposals which (if all built) would use 22.5 GW of power. The whole province is currently using less than 11 GW.

The reckless expansion of mega data centers has gone unchecked for too long. An immediate halt on approvals for new mega data centres is the circuit breaker we urgently need. Sign the petition to protect our water and energy, and force Big Tech to put people before profits: act.gp/3We3MLO

Canada's going in the wrong direction. Emissions are going up not down, a direct result of weakened policies. Planned oil/gas production increases will further increase GHGs. Despite Ministers' insistence that we're still committed to net zero in 2050, the policies needed to do that aren't in place.

Canadian Climate Institute@climateinstitute.bsky.social

NEW: Our latest early estimate of Canada’s national emissions shows higher gas use drove up emissions in 2025. But clean electrification can help steer Canada back toward net zero. https://440megatonnes.ca/insight/early-estimate-canadas-emissions-increased-in-2025/

Holy cow "government’s huge subsidization of this project – up to 90 per cent of a $40-billion pipeline with ownership split evenly between Ottawa and Edmonton – ....." What kind of a deal is that? esp cuz we're subsidizing the past world of energy markets www.theglobeandmail.com/business/com...

Suncor is before the US Supreme Court today, trying to get a lawsuit from Boulder, Colorado dismissed. Boulder says Suncor and ExxonMobil should pay for some of their costs of adapting to climate change because oil cos lied about their role in causing it. Apparently not going well for them...

Chris Geidner@chrisgeidner.bsky.social

First take out of arguments: A rough morning for Suncor. Tough to find five votes to get past the jurisdictional questions. Even if they do, the constitutional arguments did not have support. That leaves the Clean Air Act preemption argument, under which (at least) some claims are likely to survive.

For the rest of us, AI is a technology that steals our water, pollutes our air, drives up our energy bills and warps our politics in horrible ways. All while trying to take away our jobs (or at least convince our bosses it can do our jobs, so they should pay us less).

Let’s not add ‘make Jeff Bezos richer while helping kill innocent people faster’ to that list. It’s time we pressed pause on AI until we can get the rules in place that make it work for people, not just for billionaires.

In place of actual regulation, we get a non-binding/unenforceable “framework” for AI data centres and a multi-million dollar program to “educate” Canadians on why they are wrong to distrust AI.

That distrust has been earned. To quote @doctorow.pluralistic.net: the most important fact about any technology isn’t what it does. It’s who it does it for & who it does it to. AI, in its current form, works brilliantly for tech billionaires like Bezos or Musk & their political allies like Trump.

These are controversial because AI could potentially make life-or-death decisions without meaningful human control. Canada should not be going down this road without some kind of public debate.
