Sad to see a decades-old, community written, open source platform emulator declare that it will go into "maintenance mode" because someone used a LLM to reverse engineer the OS and re-implement the entire thing as cross-platform native code. It used to be fun to take things apart on your own.

The secure certificate used by older versions of Playdate OS is about to expire. To connect to our servers after that, update your Playdate OS today: Settings → System → Software Update You'll want to be on version 3.0.5 or higher. Can't update today? Contact our support and we'll help.

Me: I want to put more content out there, maybe I should post more to Bluesky? Or forums? [rebuilds personal site using 11ty so he can easily just write markdown files and fucking publish them like it's 2002] I'm nothing if not predictable!

Replying to @micahflee.com

HaJ3FgupAm8RrDJW3MHgT9X7Ft27eVaD What is that? That's a hard-coded API token that Flock cameras use to identify themselves and get OAuth credentials, which can then be used to talk to Flock's production servers. Like, anyone on the internet can probably do this right now.

I used to repair and reimage these machines decades ago. One came to me recently in pretty mint condition. The drive even still spins. Going to give this one an IDE to CF conversion. Weirdly though, this model had no sound hardware built in. Do I have a PC Card sound card kicking around? Hrm

Good thing we don’t have a long history of people incorrectly projecting human traits on computers and overestimating what they’re really doing.

There's a reason why "these are just statistical predictions" hasn't caught on in the discourse, and it's not the tech press. It's that people see them reading and writing and reasoning and scheming and they realize that the stochastic-parrots framing is outdated and inadequate to the moment

It's normal to reuse take out containers, to mend old or damaged clothes, to use table cloths, sheets or curtains for fabric, to turn your left overs into a new meal, to have mismatched cutlery, to buy second hand & refurbished tech.

Hey remember how they promised that 3D TVs were the future, but they withered on the vine because they solved a problem no one had, so no one bought them? We can still do that for generative "AI" and chatbots, it's not too late. This crap is not a foregone conclusion.

While our neighbors on the street sleep outside in -30° C weather, it's a good time to remember that the city of Toronto spends more on policing than it does on community housing, public libraries, fire services, and EMS combined. We can have cops or we can have real safety.

Folks in Canada watching this horror unfold should not think of it as an American problem. During a housing crisis, alarming food insecurity, and cuts to every meaningful social support at the federal and provincial level Canada is hiring more CBSA agents & increasing border & military spending.

Call the thing by its name. A thread:

Wildly different things, tasks, techniques, subspecialties being lumped into "AI" and then being conflated with each other, doesn't help. Different types of models vs the techniques to train them vs the tasks they are supposed to accomplish, all under "AI".

I say this with zero irony: if you are even tangentially a part of a retro video game community, it is your civic duty to push back against this company and shun anyone who doesn't. This is fascism tapping gently at the door and as soon as you let it in, it's going to invite its friends.

New addition to the collection, Sharp PT-9000 from 1994. You know it's rare when you can't find anyone else who owns one online. Serial number ends in 00011. The touchscreen digitizer is giving me problems, it's practically impossible to complete the pen calibration #vintagecomputer #dos

Everytime you want to use AI to make some ridiculous image or video, ask yourself - is this worth the lives of Congolese people? droughts in low income US cities? exploitation of artists & cultural producers? extinction?

Translation: After we built an addictive tool based on stolen data, exploited labor and plundering the environment, which pushes kids to commit suicides, we were like, why not cash in on "erotica"? After all, this is what building so-called AGI that "benefits humanity" looks like.

Steve Shirley escaped the Holocaust as a child & went on to found one of the earliest software startups. The really impressive part? She employed women programmers who had been pushed out of the workforce after having kids, & allowed them flexible, family friendly, work from home jobs—in the 1960s!

Listen, I'm going to need us to stop saying that humans are horrible and that all the injustice in the world right now is our collective doing. It's the doing of a handful of people, and we know their names.

A bit rich coming from Poilievre when his own wife retweeted a post by Andrew Scheer directing the right-wing mob to go after @rachelgilmore.bsky.social. His family’s safety matters. No so much those who don’t subscribe to his political project.

Should you find yourself the only masked person at work or in a store, please, do not despair, instead just think back to kindergarten and your teacher asking “if everyone else jumped off a bridge would you do it too?” and know that at least you can honestly say: no.
