My debut book is OUT TODAY! 'Such Great Heights: The Complete Cultural History of the Indie Rock Explosion' is about how indie rock changed the mainstream and the mainstream changed indie rock in the 21st century. Buy it and let me know what you think:

Now that the Flaming Lips have left Warner Bros. after 35 years, the post-Nirvana major label gold rush is finally and truly over—this is like when the last Civil War veteran died.

That’s where the k-cup goes

Wrote about the Seahawks spoiling prodigal bellcow Ken Walker's return, plus more thoughts from Week 7 in the NFL

Chris is writing another book! Prepare to cop that shit in two years or so!

My second book will be LOSING MY EDGE (AND LOVING IT), a series of essays about middle age, parenthood, and navigating the washed life, viewed through the lens of formerly hip indie bands that have become dad rock. Look for it in 2028.

Gibbs' reaction in particular brought me so much joy

Living my best life (leaving the neighborhood Halloween party to go see Bassvictim)

Wrote about the 20th anniversary of My Chemical Romance's The Black Parade, a no-shit classic rock opus in a weird time for those, and why I couldn't quite see it for what it was at the time.

Remembering Taylor Swift's stint as a precocious pop-country teen and not "a benignly oppressive cultural force" really does feel like looking back on a different world. @tombreihan.bsky.social is right: "It's hard not to find it all a little bittersweet."

Last night's @opencup.ussoccer.com final was the best chance at a trophy for the 2026 Columbus Crew. They ultimately fell in a penalty shootout, but not before playing one of the most electric 0-0 soccer games I've ever seen. My report for @matternews.bsky.social: matternews.org/community/th...

My latest @stereogum.com column is up: It starts with a look at David Murray's first year of recordings, from 1976, and then reviews new records by JD Allen, Anna Webber, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Dave Holland, Julieta Eugenio, James Brandon Lewis, Sisonke Xonti and more! stereogum.com/2515225/davi...

holy smokes, conan strikes up a chat with a random lady on the subway and she immediately starts riffing on his level, no problem.

Holy shit

The backlash to "Jay-Z picks Jay-Z as Super Bowl Halftime Show headliner" ignores the fact that Jay-Z is a good and deserving Super Bowl Halftime Show headliner

Clean design, crisp sound, and the god-tier music curation you’d expect from Aquarium Drunkard. Such a refreshing experience top to bottom with no clutter whatsoever and a seamless crossover experience in Apple Music. Absolute slam dunk.

Smart piece from Margaret about a certain kind of context-free digital intimacy involving ear, Lockimara, gash, Trusselina, Melaina Kol, et al

Wrote about International Anthem as A24 for jazz (complimentary), the incredible wealth of music coming out of that world, and ANIMATIVE, the phenomenal new album from SML's Josh Johnson

I gave this interview about my book SUCH GREAT HEIGHTS, indie music, and the art of music criticism to the great Tommy Britt at the airport one day some time ago. I'm glad it's finally out there for you to read! His questions are great, and hopefully my answers rise to the occasion.

University of Sydney's Cinegraphia Vol. 2 No. 1 is available now. The interview in this issue is one I conducted with my longtime friend and absolute music authority, @chrisdeville.bsky.social, about his fantastic book 'Such Great Heights'. Enjoy! openjournals.library.sydney.edu.au/Cinegraphia/...

Meta took down the No Kings instagram; TikTok banned the Musk documentary account for supposedly violating its political posting policies. A reminder that platforms are owned by the wealthiest of people, control the means of media distribution, & put their thumbs on the democracy scale as they wish

Blowing up the regular season, against the wishes of almost all fans, just to assuage the egos of a handful of donors placate coaches worried about losing their 8-million-dollar jobs. What a waste.
