CDs have arrived. Excited to sell you one next Thursday night at Local Note in Evanston! Don’t have a CD player? We hear these make great paperweights, coasters, or decorations… 😅

Sharing for Chicago/Northshore locals: the big Evanston event for International Jazz Day is happening THIS THURSDAY! Featuring local jazz legends, Donovan Mixon and Chris Greene, as well as some awfully talented ETHS students, 7th Period. (As well as In Full Swing and the @chicagojazzdads.com.)

Red had already been playing in Miles Davis’ First Great Quintet for a year with Paul Chambers. They added Art Taylor on drums and captured a sort of laid-back electricity that defined the jazz sound of the late ’50s and of which Garland was a master.

Happy birthday to George Shearing, who was born on this day in 1919. #jazzsky #todayinjazz Check him out playing his own standard, “Lullaby of Birdland,” in Munich in 1992, with Neil Swainson absolutely destroying the upright: www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zJn...

Only now hearing about Andy Bey. The first time I heard his voice I was completely arrested. I remember I had to stop what I was doing and figure out who it was. Still gives me goosebumps. Thank you, Andy. #jazzsky #jazzgreats www.nytimes.com/2025/04/29/a...

David Lay Williams@laywilliams.bsky.social

Next Thursday (Feb. 13), the @chicagojazzdads.com are celebrating Valentine's Day with a special show at Evanston Pour. We'll be performing the When Harry Met Sally soundtrack (with bonus tracks!). The perfect Valentine's date because it's free! Come early, as we expect a good crowd!

Whaddya mean “not academic”? We’re a master’s course in how to swing as a dad. See you all Thursday.

Jazz interludes! If you enjoyed my conversation with @laywilliams.bsky.social about wealth inequality, you'll love our totally not-academic Thursday night gig with @chicagojazzdads.com. We're playing at Evanston Pour. Join us and get some Jazz Dads swag and David might sight your book!

Come join us at Squeezebox in Evanston tonight from 6-7pm during the Main-Dempster Mile’s Holiday Stroll. We’ll be doing a stripped down trio show of your favorite holiday tunes. Requests welcome! #jazzsky
