I remember sitting in the no smoking section of an airplane.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Ukrainian National Guard troops rescued six cats from Russian-occupied Oleshky in an unusual drone operation. With help from locals, the cats were placed in a specially designed cage and flown more than 10 km across the Dnipro beneath a heavy bomber drone. All six made it across safely. #Ukraine

Putin's trying to win the war by magic. They dug up the bones of a mediaeval prince who became a saint in 1988, and sent them to protect refineries and front lines by people praying to them. Ukraine hit the refineries and now the front lines, destroying the relics though "almost no one" was killed 😂

On the front line, Ukrainian soldier Serhii shares touching moments of caring for, feeding, and cuddling local cats. For him, taking care of these small lives is a personal mission and a way to hold onto humanity amid the ongoing war. Video: fasst1k / Threads.

Residents of Russian-occupied Oleshky are facing severe food shortages, with reports of civilians eating grass and weeds, Ukraine’s FM Sybiha says. Medicine, clean water, electricity and medical care are increasingly unavailable. He called for humanitarian access and evacuation. #Ukraine

Friends! It's the feast day of St. Hildegard of Bingen, an abbess, polymath, mystic, & eel truth-teller. Medieval thinkers agreed that eels reproduce asexually. But Hildegard suggested that eels mate at sea, where we can't watch. No one listened to her. But she was right! 1/2 🗃️🧪

Ukrainian defense tech company Firepoint has launched a game on its social media: guess the next Wildberries warehouse to be destroyed and win merch. It looks like the campaign to destroy logistics centers is continuing.

Kudos to Irish journalist and film producer Caolan Robertson for single-handedly dismantling the myth of his country's 'neutrality' by exposing the collaboration between Ireland's political elite and the russian terror state!

This is the first I’m hearing about this. The amplified call to prayer is for 3 min on Fridays around noon. Might pop by this week to see if I can hear it.

And are you surprised to learn two men who've often been accused of inciting violence on social media are actually lying about what happened in Regina? The loudspeaker is privately owned, on private land and complies with all city bylaws IMO the monsters want to see people dead

There is no reason to be concerned about this. History gives us precisely no examples of would-be authoritarians using fake emergencies as cover for seizing absolute power. My suggestion would be for all Americans and especially all politicians in Washington to continue doing whatever they're doing.

Pierre Bourdieu once argued that the question of whether something is art isn't answered by the artist's intention or even the object itself. Instead, the quality of being "art" is conferred by a community — curators, dealers, auction houses, audiences, etc. 🧵

I keep thinking about the documentary Fires of Kuwait (1992). I support Ukrainian sanctions, but god, the environmental harm being caused is no joke. And it would stop in a heartbeat if russia just… went home.

This sounds bad, and it’s only surface level: much of the sound data centres produce is not audible to the human ear, and yet it can cause very serious illness. youtu.be/_bP80DEAbuo?...

this is why there’s been mass revolt and opposition to data centers being built in communities. it is genuinely a health hazard to live this close to something emitting this much sound. these need to stop being built

Given Trump’s Easter threats to carry out new war crimes in Iran, we should think one or two steps ahead about a coup attempt connected to the war. And then deter it. (1/17)

In his recent op-ed, Oleh Kotsyuba of Harvard University’s Ukrainian Research Institute compares the current protests in Minneapolis to Ukraine's 2013–2014 Revolution of Dignity, noting similarities in both the staging and spirit of both events.

kyivindependent.comHere's why Minneapolis reminds me of what I once saw in UkraineWhen the government asserts authority in ways that a growing share of the public experiences as arbitrary or vindictive, it begins to lose legitimacy.

I have been actively involved in protest movements for 24 years. I have never seen anything approaching this scale. Minneapolis is not accepting what's happening here. ICE fucking murdered a woman for participating in this, and all that did is bring out more people, from more walks of life.

Equal parts fascinating and horrifying

It's somewhat amusing that you can pass yourself off as a Russia expert commenting on this "peace deal" as messy but at least "a way to end the war" without realising Kremlin sees it as just a tactic to continue it later. It will end nothing.
