Also the Andy Yen stuff and Ladybird connection. It's big effort to avoid fascism, homophobia, transphobia, white supremacists in tech/OSS. I was a 1Password customer until they gave money to above-noted troglodyte. Where do we go.

I see the Shopify guy has ginned up some homo-hate on the other site w his post about a a Toronto safe streets ad that used w two ostensibly gay dads walking their child. What a fucking hateful destructive menace. Just enjoy your money asshole.

The time is nigh. All out to save our bike lanes! We anticipate removals staring this coming Tuesday. Stay tuned here for details on community responses. Location is of course Bloor West between Islington and Royal York. Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more.

In lieu of enforcing traffic laws on drivers of wanktanks running red lights & driving 20km/hr over the speed limit, Toronto cops are ticketing people on bikeshare e-bikes the City of Toronto encourages helmetless riding on by the very nature of the service bikeshare provides. @mayoroliviachow.ca

TPS issuing tickets & warnings to BikeShareTO e-bike riders w/out helmets. Unlike other rental services you can't rent a helmet from Bike ShareTO. Seems like a fantastic use of $1.5billion police budget. If that guy had crashed & injured himself would the helmet harassment have been worth it? God.

The Doug Ford government has yanked an essential portion of funding for Spacing Magazine (and other important Ontario publications). This puts both the magazine and the @spacingradio.bsky.social podcasts in jeopardy: the magazine pays for the podcast.

The so-called survey about the expansion of Billy Bishop Airport is full of leading questions, it makes you really wonder if the fix is in to give Doug Ford what he wants. It sometimes seems that Mark Carney’s strategy is to give everyone everything they want. open.substack.com/pub/lloydalt...

Mark Carney is the first PM to ever cobble together a majority government through floor crossing. Power was gained with backroom deals, not the ballot box. Today I introduced Bill C-278 to require MPs earn voter consent before switching parties. If your reasons are valid, defend them to voters.

Given that a big part of the role of the RCMP throughout history has been removing Indigenous peoples from their lands and culture, it’s not surprising the federal government is hiring more RCMP just as they plan to ramp up resource extraction on Indigenous lands.

Canadians deserve to be safe in their communities. That’s why we’re hiring 1,000 new RCMP personnel — and giving law enforcement the tools and support they need to keep our streets safe.

OSS burnout claims another project. On 2 Apr, an entitled user angrily asked the burned-out maintainer of nvim-treesitter to “go switch to something that doesn't require interacting with people”. The maintainer replied “OK” — and archived the repo, stopping development of nvim-treesitter.

vlad.websiteOpen Source Burnout Claims Another ProjectYet another OSS maintainer quits because of burnout. To fix this, we need better mental health resources for maintainers.

I can’t say enough good things about the JavaScript for Everyone course, Every Layout and the articles and newsletter published by Piccalilli. If you’re looking to explore the exciting world of front-end, these are dollars very well spent.

I can't stress enough how important it is to make an example here. Take all the money from these companies. Find alternatives. Vote with your pockets because fundamentally money and power is everything to these insufferable pricks.

#CSS question: Given two items in a flex container, is there a way to have a vertical border (border-inline-end) between the items when the items are adjacent in a row, and a horizontal border (border-block-end) when the items are stacked in a column?

I investigated some open-source CMS tools (Ghost, Grav et al) but in the end, the most straightforward approach was to add a site to my existing WordPress multi-site instance. Building with WordPress often feels slow and clunky, but you end up with a robust product.

I don't usually work on "commercial" (using this term loosely) projects like this; it was a good chance to update my skills around SEO and analytics. I try to avoid excessive use of analytics, but some of the data gathering and analysis techniques are kind of fun 😬

I don't usually post in here, but I want to get this on the record so people I interact with know where I'm coming from. I live in Canada. I oppose imperialism, war, threats on national sovereignty, unchecked capitalism, racism, and patriarchy.

My kid will be 18 in ten years. I worry that I, the kid, or both of us will be forced to fight a war. I'm optimistic that society will see what the US government is doing to the world and the pendulum will swing the other direction. But I'm worried it won't.

You are up to date.
