Well. This is a thing. A few weeks ago, I announced my new publication in American Psychologist on LinkedIn and didn't do it here. This was clearly a mistake, as some of Bluesky has decided to pile on some... Critique of a student article talking about my work in context. I have some things to say🧵

Interacting with folks on Bluesky over the past couple days has been an interesting experience I see some folks who seeing commentary, immediately making assumptions, and stating what they believe are truths based on these assumptions I also others who are scared because of harms done by academics

That's why I made a choice. I'm not mad at folks who are taking pot shots at my research or at the article. But I have chosen this weekend to engage. I think engaging with people online and in these spaces is important.

I don't know if I will change people's minds. I don't know if I will convince anyone to chill a sec the next time they see new research or the next time they see a "Study says" headline. But maybe one or two people think, "Well damn. Cat was decent, so maybe we give this next person a little grace"

That last one came out of a well-known, conservative social psychologists lab. Those of us in the field know who it is. There have been, and are, harms that are being done to the trans community. These harms also extend to the folks who support the trans community

Some of these folks are still tenured professors. Some have retired but still manage to do damage. This isn't even getting into the potential damage that has been done by recent journalism. It's no wonder people immediately assume the worst

And then there is the Cass Review, the US version of the Cass Review (like the Cass Review, but somehow worse?), calls for therapeutic methods that prioritize "making people comfortable with their 'biological sex'", reports that apparently "demonstrate" that supporting trans people make you violent

Did I say "harms done by academics"? Yup. There are a lot of great academics who highlight and attempt to address disparities, who aim to understand gender development among trans adolescents and adults, who center their work in the trans community. There are also some who perpetrate harm

Science journalism is hard. Journalism about minoritized people is hard. I know folks are facing an environment of fear (to reference the words of one of my participants). But maybe we show grace to those who want to highlight trans voices (including my own)? Who want to help?

These are students who are learning how to navigate complex topics in a cautious manner. It is a lot like scientistific writing -- it has to be cautious. Folks don't learn well through shame. And shaming people who do speak up for minoritized folks might lead them to silence later (9)

This student wrote a good article that happened to have a suboptimal headline. She is delightful. She cared. She is the type of person I want to see in journalism. I want her to continue to write about important topics and not be afraid of facing so much antipathy (10)

As tempted as I am, I'm not going on a rant about how Nazis destroyed much of the early scientific research about trans people. My students already get to hear that. Though it might be a topic for another day... (7)

I also want to take a second to talk about the importance of journalism and learning. The article headline that folks are piling on to right now is from a student run, university paper (8)

I did this work because it is important to highlight the experiences of trans people while the broader community faces an existential threat in the US (and in many places across the world). I did this work because Trans Voices Matter (5)

Some folks are says "well, duh. Water is wet. There are forks in the kitchen" This kinda of response demonstrates not only a profound misunderstanding about how science works, but it demonstrates a lack of understanding about how easily minoritized voices can be silenced (6)

We dug deeper, asking our participants how anti-TGD legislation had impacted them. The responses were real and raw and painful. Participants discussed fear, referring to legislation as an existential threat. They about changing social norms and about their fears about the presidential election (4)

In our work, my colleagues and I took a mixed-methods, participant-centered approach to examining the impacts of anti-transgender legislation on TGD populations. I did this work to highlight the words and experiences of trans people. (2)

We found that anxiety about anti-trans legislation was more strongly associated with psychological distress than even everyday experiences of discrimination (and having social support helped reduce psychological distress). State-level legislative support was unrelated to psychological distress ⁉️ (3)

So trans kids just "grow out of it"? Our work, highlighted here by Society Workshop, suggests that the previous claims about desistance that have been normalized for years are incredibly unreliable

Society Workshop@societyworkshop.bsky.social

Do youth just "grow out of" their gender identities? The answer to this question has historically been based on a small number of data points in a handful of studies. A recent meta-analysis has called that evidence too preliminary. Here is a video summary of that research.

There are actors within this ecosystem that transplanted fringe positions onto front pages, and then used the reaction to justify the article retroactively. It’s been the most successful avenue of attack, far and away above all others. The DW’s millions didn’t make a fraction of the dent this did.

The preprint is now available: osf.io/preprints/ps... Thanks to the PsyArXiv moderators for their speedy review! Freely available to any who want to read about the many ways in which the oft-cited literature on desistance spectacularly fails to support the claim of widespread desistance

I am so happy that this has finally seen the light of day. On the one hand, it seems an obvious answer to an obvious question, but it needed to be done. And I'm never gonna start harping on the bit about the Spice Girls. Ever.
