The story of Cavan Sullivan is a story about American soccer idols, and by extension, a story about American soccer itself, both the good and the bad. 20 years after Freddy Adu, American soccer has its prodigy. For @scoutedftbl.com, the tales we weave about Cavan and all that came before (🎁 link):

why am i just now learning that Mussolini's great grandson plays right back for lazio? like yeah, fork found in kitchen, but still

College newspaper crossword had the following clue in today’s paper: “Pelé was its 1976 MVP.” Brought a tear to my eye.

So, in case you were wondering, the max salary budget charge for an MLS player is 12.5% of the salary cap. Per Ella, the new HIP cutoff is 12% of the salary cap. "The league can also set a limit on the number of HIP players per club." Reinventing DPs from first principles.

But yeah, the ideal answer is still to increase the cap. The NWSLPA has been doing great work, though.

I very much believe that if you reference Open Cup and FA Cup in your press release about a new tournament that your new tournament should actually resemble those two things and include amateur teams. That's the growth. Not two div. I leagues.

Shoutout to @meglinehan.com mentioning that if the Arthur Blank Crest Cup wants to call itself the women's soccer Open Cup, there should be amateur teams involved. (Also subscribe to Full Time)

NEW: Christian Pulisic exited Milan’s draw at Sassuolo early - not for injury, but for a more dangerous young alternative. The 28-year-old holds new status for club and country these days: a key veteran, not a focal point. His pressure-cooker career may benefit. www.theguardian.com/football/202...

Cata is always must-read, but this is especially stellar work – not only on what makes Cavan Sullivan special, but dissecting the many factors which make it increasingly tricky to manage expectations around a top American soccer prospect. The definitive piece on the topic. An instant Cata classic.

In May, it was reported that U.S. Soccer was exploring possibilities for a cross-competition women’s tournament that would operate similarly to the Lamar Hunt Open Cup. Here’s the case for why something similar to an open cup should definitely exist in women’s soccer: ✍️ for @theixsports.bsky.social
