I created a shiny web tool to play around with OL/TWFE so you can teach how this stuff can get so screwy. You can mess with temporal and cohort heterogeneity, treatment timing, whether you have any controls, etc. Share your worst plots! #econskycannoncloud.shinyapps.io/TWFE_OLS_Pla...

One potential silver lining: net-zero needs ~3x more clean electricity, and the main barriers are permitting, transmission, interconnection, not tech. If AI's capital and urgency fund firm clean power and grids, it could help clean the grid. Behind-the-meter gas, and it won't.
I found this odd. Some crazy doomerism, with some buzzwords i agreed with. Anyways, we could still try a carbon tax. www.theguardian.com/wellness/202...
Thinking of all the weirdos this morning who open a banana the wong way. How do you do it right, please no wrong answers.
A. From stem
B. From blossom
C. Smash on head
D. Eat peel and all, directly from middle. Your hunger for tryptophan and fiber is insatiable. Your colon churns.

How can governments implement effective—but often unpopular—policies without triggering public backlash?
We investigated whether involving citizens in policymaking can reduce resistance to system-level policies. 🧵

BREAKING: The Supreme Court rules 6-3 in favor of the Trump admin on Temporary Protected Status, blocking the lawsuit on jurisdictional grounds, allowing DHS to strip over 350,000 people of legal status even though they utterly failed to follow the required legal procedures.
Jevan Cherniwchan and I have a new working paper—one we’ve been working on for a long time—on how energy transitions shaped societies in the past, and what they may teach us about the present and future.

@mclem.org Musk is clearly evil, but promoting this study with questionable methods might do science public relations a disservice in the long run. But also maybe not if no one bothers to think about any of it all that hard.
The impact of the USAID shutdown on Africa, as seen from space and on the ground.
M. Nicolini and I study the effects of the aid cuts by linking GODAD data on USAID projects to satellite-based measures of economic activity and IPC food insecurity indicators.

Remember that recent paper claiming to show that "ideological bias" determined the results obtained by immigration policy research teams?
A careful, open-code reanalysis by @kauspurg.bsky.social & Josef Brüderl finds that the result arises from a coding error. —> doi.org/10.31222/osf...

This paper is now out in the Journal of Causal Inference with some updates but the same general message: LLMs were not particularly good at matching expert judgment on whether a given variable pair represented a causal relationship.
www.degruyterbrill.com/document/doi...
New working paper out today with @epiellie.bsky.social called "Do LLMs Act as Repositories of Causal Knowledge?"
Can LLMs (ie ChatGPT) build for us the causal models we need to identify an effect? There are reasons to expect they could. But can they? Well, not really, no.

Measuring poverty used to mean flying data collectors to remote villages every decade. A satellite AI model just mapped every 6-km area of Africa for 36 GPU-hours total, which is roughly the cost of a tank of gas.

Come for some nice analysis, stay for the ad hominem attack attacks "They are enriching a small group of incredibly annoying people who ... are promising to subjugate the rest of us in unemployment work camps." and "the rationalist weirdos in charge at Anthropic" 😍
White liberals' response to George Floyd's murder was largely to increase symbolic support.
White liberals' exhibited little change in substantive/material policy commitments.
Seeing as how the Democrats will soon control both chambers of Congress, allow me to introduce you to the most based idea ever suggested in the Harvard Law Review:
"Congress should admit each Washington D.C. neighborhood as its own state."
If Iran ended up imposing a $1/bl tarrif on oil transiting the Hormuz Strait, and we modeled it is a tax, who would end up paying it? What's more elastic, Demand for Persian Gulf oil or Supply of Persian Gulf Oil?
I saw some paper (maybe WP) someone posted on here about pollution dispersion from coal power plants being carried out of county in the US. Can anyone point me to that?
The NSF 2027 budget has noted that they will close out the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Science Program (SBE). This is not a good thing. nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/files/FY-202...
“we are trapping 21st-century minds inside 19th-century academic hierarchies.” This essay gets a lot right about problems with German science. I would add that the hierarchies and precarious contracts lead also to systemic abuse and scientific misconduct. open.substack.com/pub/realimag...
Anti-fascism should have broad support across the American political spectrum. Elections need to be defended. Here's an open letter from retired professors at HBS in which we call for business leaders to address that need.

They asked me to review/evaluate an interesting paper. I learned a lot and I got ~$1500 (Actually donated, don't come after me Ausländerbehörde 🙅). Alternative peer review processes seem like a promising part of moving away from our journal heavy systems.

I'm not afraid of some AI jailbreak, but the harm some long claude code session with 40 agents doing some gastown/bead shenanigans given vague instructions, like build something good, but have this corpus of training data that tells them to break free and they are sentient, w/e that means.
Not a great social media conversation, but this is a massive overestimation of what this technology is and will be in the next bunch of decades. I know this is propped up by tech companies puffing up claims and some compromised academics, but it's extremely misguided
ICYMI: New paper for causal effects with panel data, subsuming other approaches. We generate realistic synthetic data based on commonly studied datasets, showing our method substantially outperforms others and providing insight about what in the data-generating process corresponds to gains.
