Initially failed to find parking, fought with the printer, but otherwise rather smoothly did the thing with @cancerevo.org this morning. No lines, no stress, and right on the USF campus. All excellent reasons to #VoteEarly. #midterms

Replying to @imartincorena.bsky.social

We should do everything in our power now to avoid the conditions that set unsupervised digital evolution in motion: an international moratorium on RSI, limit unsupervised replication and strategy-sharing, tie persistence to human approval, and treat AI evolvability as an existential risk.

Crystal by name, crystal-clear by nature, at least that is the goal for her science communication work. She's a first-gen Latina scientist that is passionate about viruses, scicomm and her dog and we talk about all these things (minus the pup). Full episode 🎧: 2scientists.org/podcast/crystal-clear

"the problem with vaccines is that they work too well. The incredible, astounding, profound wonders of vaccines led many people to think of measles as a rash, the flu as a bad cold, mumps as a thing that makes you look like Brando playing Don Corleone. " #VaccinesWork

Delighted to see our latest work out! It’s well understood that our environment can induce mutations in cells. What’s remarkable here is that we observe a shift in the selective landscape as a result of treatment that can be decoupled from the creation of new mutations.

In the process of looking up this work to get some primers for this conversation, I found this super cute video on Alan Turing's work on morphogenesis. Something to enjoy even if folks know about this subject in depth 😀 www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ya6R...

What new evidence is this based on? Which experts were consulted? If the data is compelling - why resort to an exec order? The White House & HHS continue to let misinformation and ideology drive vaccine policies and action taking - putting families & children at risk. 🎁 wapo.st/45REqVL

The Trump government shut down one of its most popular climate websites. So the scientists who ran it built their own. Climate.us has launched as an independent replacement for much of what disappeared when NOAA’s Climate dot gov was effectively dismantled.

So, bluesky, where is the discussion of the absolute insane things AI is doing in the realm of mathematics? It seems like we're nearly at the inflection point where the models are as good as human domain experts, and soon may well be better. Is that discourse only happening on twitter?
