not the first to note this but once you give the thing a name you're cooked. another way LLMs are like a demon or a fae i guess. names have power

I too have struggled with the beginning-of-the-year "describe your kid in three words" requests from teachers. But didn't turn to A.I. for help. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/s...

IMO we’re really missing a practice for staying sane in a paradigm shift

I think it scrambles your instruments, the instability makes it extremely hard to know what’s causing what, which makes it hard to plan or decide what to do next, and you keep acting from that place…

“keep austin weird” appears to have been a real monkey’s paw type deal

been at the houston airport for four hours and brother you better BELIEVE im imagining sisyphus happy

my nuclear take remains that calling techno DJ sets church is the realm of tech workers with stunted souls. real humanity is found in the pit or a carly rae jepsen show. accept no substitutes

at the knocked loose show and the teens are already doing a circle pit to the k mart chevelle opener. hardcore will never die

in retrospect watching a slice of life anime expressly about how smoking cigarettes kicks ass may not have been the best choice while actively quitting

the openai math drop seems concerning but it is extremely validating for those of us who got an F in algebra 2 for being drunk in class and never took a real math course again

unfortunately i've come to believe fairly strongly that online community is deeply insufficient for the human experience, which makes it hard to stay attuned to the online communities i care about

To reiterate on a point I've made before, I really wanna see more Neocities-style unhedged rejection of the post-FB web in the AT Protocol world. I imagine a lot of people may see that approach as being more unserious or impractical, but I really do think it's worth trying

we need a version of "too online" for people who spend too much time with LLMs. psychosis feels too severe for the folks who maybe aren't going full timecube but clearly just need to go outside

we gotta turn "check out this app i made" into "check out this rock i found"

everybody racing to reinvent philosophy of mind from first principles rn is going to be so bummed out when they finally find out about determinism

while you were partying i was reading david chalmers while you were having premarital sex i was arguing about light cones and now that the world is on fire and the swarms are at the gates you ask me if claude has moral status?

somehow i have reached a point in my life where my friends and loved ones actively push back when i'm being negative about myself and boy is it a strange and beautiful thing to be surrounded by people who care enough to do that

turns out being constantly self-deprecating is actually pretty annoying to people who love you and think you're great. real egg on my face there

i don’t doubt that pigs are conscious but i think it’s in the same way that cenobites are. if you gave them opposable thumbs they’d invent the lament configuration

Let me just explain the arithmetic thing real quick; I'm seeing a lot of people not understanding what it's supposed to show (or was supposed to show in 2023). First, let's agree that an LLM is a Stochastic Parrot, a description which I find poetic, useful, informative, and basically correct.

I really wasn’t trying to start a fight with Prof. Bender but now that she has created a long thread subtweeting me and her disciples are all yelling at me, let me just say that this is the crux right here. She seems to respond as though I am describing something a priori impossible.

i know times are bad and scary rn but it’s important to keep perspective on how much better things have gotten even within my lifetime. for example they sell taco bell sauce in grocery stores now

does being sick past age 30 have an incredibly long tail or do i just have a horrible constitution score?

People call this album problematic, but what makes it great—makes it art—is how it’s the sound of a man putting his every Bad Thought on the page, and only recognizing about half of them as being Bad. And then there’s that splashy drumming, that sludgy bass, that sound of barely holding together

I also think there is a hint of an implication that trying to describe or understand the difference is ivory tower nonsense time-wasting and/or r/thisisdeep posting which I think is wrong. It’s precisely the fact that the line has gotten harder to see that makes identifying it worthwhile.

teriyaki cart by work has been going downhill lately but i am willing to die on the hill of not getting lunch from a salad chain or Wonder

do not tell me to pack a lunch. if i were the kind of person who had it together like that do you really think i’d be posting in here

i need people to STOP calling me and texting me all the time unless i’m BORED in which case i need everyone to pick up their phone or respond to my texts IMMEDIATELY

the problem with interesting technology is that engineers would much rather entertain themselves with how interesting it is than prove why it's interesting for others

sort of half-formed atproto thought but: i see people talk about how we need more artists working with atproto but i think what that means is poorly defined. at least in the case of software artists the promise of a "locked open" web is huge and really exciting but not a lot is being done with it

anyway im trying to be the change i want to see in the world (soon) but i generally think more remixes and weird experiments and less "existing app, but on the protocol" would help artists understand the possibilities here

i had my students build bots on bsky last semester. sure it was partly me doing my part to indoctrinate them but it was mostly because atproto makes it *so much easier* than any way i'd ever taught before. i think there are a lot of other things this is true of that just haven't clicked for people

i see a lot of apps that are a different way to view posts/blogs/whatever but not a lot of artistic experimentation. atproto could be the base for a new golden age of data art (what if all data was open?) but we gotta get more computer art sickos and less app developers on here

man i hate to hand it to openai but it is wild how much less insane their paid models are than the various claudes. massive own goal by anthropic
