I do think it would be a useful reflex for us to develop as a society where if someone has a clear interest in concentrating wealth then they are presumed to be an abuser of some form rather than sticking with the idolisation that people seem to have for rich people generally

So... That Turning Point/UVF documentary with all the people admitting to actual crimes is going nowhere except the memory hole then, huh? Damn, you'd think that'd be at least one or two real journalists in the country capable of feeling shame about what that says about the industry.

This is not a "you didn't KNOW?" post because I truly envy and respect anyone unaware of Linehan's output BUT he's been EXTREMELY racist for years now. Attacking black actors on his wife's show Motherland as diversity hires; podcast screeds about muslims in Ireland; delighting in Palestinian deaths.

the most moderate, apolitical and non-controversial opinion in Elon Musk is that everything he sells is too good to be true, and will either fall apart and be expensive to fix, or will be clawed back and resold to you for more money

Another one here where the British press just smashed fuck out of a member of the public’s life for no good reason, just because they wanted to and nobody will stop them doing at. And they’re still going, even now.

I’d say his greatest political trick was destroying most of the Gaza Strip while the world’s most stridently malicious liberals relentlessly screamed abuse at anyone who objected to it

You have to laugh at the sheer insanity of Turning Point UK being found to be organising literal contract killings and paid agitation at protests up and down the country and it barely even raises a flicker across the press. If that isn't 'terrorism' on some level I don't really know what is

Jo Rowling's accusation of elitism is a bit like the way some people who are pieces of shit like to say "you think you are better than me" indignantly to justify being pieces of shit. I don't think we should read much more than that We are better than her personally. We're not elite, the bar is low

It's really useful thinking about this in terms of "decoherence", a framework I hadn't thought of before. It really strongly mirrors the ways that e.g. the Move Fast And Break Things philosophy itself tends to have a general disregard for a coherent concept of what good design might be.

It’s grimly hilarious that our government’s McCarthyist crackdowns on opposition have got so bad, so idiotic and so malicious that they may have now bullshat themselves into prosecuting the national security advisor’s wife for a terrorist offence, over a tweet.

The 1951 UN Refugee Convention is one of the legacies of the defeat of Nazism, inspired by the knowledge of the countless Jewish and other people who had been unable to escape, so I guess it’s unsurprising that Reform want to reverse it

Doesn't matter how many snappy podcast appearances he does. This is probably just as damaging to California as anything Trump is doing. A direct attack on people's capacity to limit the power of their fascist aristocracy.

I thought it was a core principle of Western liberalism (e.g. US Declaration of Independence) that it is people that have inalienable rights, not states or system of governance. And if a system of governance denies or violates people's rights, the people have the right to change it.

Priyamvada Gopal@priyamvadagopal.bsky.social

Let me make this easy. No nation-state, including my own natal land, has the right to exist based on religious or racial requirements for belonging, by dispossessing or excluding others, or having different classes of citizenship.

What he wants is for the Greens to return to their prior state as an ineffective conscience on the margins of UK politics with no interest whatsoever in matters beyond our island horizon. It is not just gesture politics. It is conservative, pessimistic and implicitly xenophobic.

When opposition parties call for the leader of another party to resign after an election loss, despite that party not being close to power, it is because they view them as some form of threat. If not, it would be in their interest for things to stay as they are

Sorry, what are we doing here. Why are we pretending that 'two states' is a viable option, that 'we just gotta do more sanctions and they'll get the message' is a viable strategy for achieving it, and that the standard, liberal Israeli position is currently still mass expulsion of the Palestinians?

George Monbiot@georgemonbiot.bsky.social

Let me try this once more. It was a choice. EITHER the Greens adopted a slogan. OR they could have joined the next govt, where they could push for an end to arms sales, sanctions, support for the arrest warrants etc. It was never going to be both. Which one makes a material difference? #GazaGenocide

The lesson to take from this is that the Allied action was not the consequence of consistent moral horror or determined ethical stance. And, precisely, that for much of the British ruling class the fear of losing colonies mattered much more than the fate of Jews at the time.

Heya folks. We're on a final push to get to £10k. We're on just over £8.3k. That's less than 1/10th of what fascist Danny Tommo has recently received inndonations after slashing a dinghy with an RNLI worker on it at sea. Meanwhile our comrade faces more than 12x the jailtime for opposing fascism.

A very dear friend and antifascist comrade is facing serious charges resulting from defending migrants housed in hotels in Bristol from a far right march in 2025. He's a father, has £11k in legal fees up front, and may be facing prison time if he doesn't win. Please dobate below.

Is a subscription Left audiobook company that works alongside Left publishers unfeasible? I'd love one where you could get however many credits a month but have the choice from things specifically from Left publishers. There are so many niche books I just never get around to reading

I know some of their stuff does get made as audiobooks and I think some have even tried to do their own audiobooks but I'm sure a full Left platform would work and get some of the overlooked books consumed
