Since I moved to LA, it seemed like every career milestone I had, Bauza was there to cheer and celebrate alongside me. My first union job, my first professional record session where we shared the booth together, all the premieres and wrap parties and gatherings, he was like the MC of our lives...

Eric Bauza did like 70% of the dialogue in "The Day The Earth Blew Up" and it's the world's longest platonic Looney Tune

Brian Gawalt@brian.gawalt.com

Coyote v Acme had a lotta people saying how good The Day The Earth Blew Up was. And they were right! 1000x more enjoyable for me than like, the Mario movie. Perfect and underserved tone for young elementary kids, & great that middle school kids who want to learn animation have a recent A+ case study

So, you're at a railing, big drop. Could be the mall's 2nd floor, could be your first few minutes in a hotel room, empire state building sky deck, whatever. You have walked up to the rail. What is "an intrusive thought" in this situation?

I do get stumped by this sometimes -- like the fish asking "what's water" -- and the cheat code is to pick the things your kids would be thrilled to hear you describe them as

Matt Darling@besttrousers.bsky.social

A thing about being a parent is you have to describe your kid to other adults a lot, and your kid is constantly changing in ways that surprise you.

The lexicon docs talk about "the case of 'double hash tags'" so here's one of those; it should be different than the last two: ##bgawalt

the pds-ls views of the two posts will show you that the `tag` literals aren't the same -- one has the octoth and one doesn't -- but they map to the same search-and-retrieval term

Here is another test of the bgsky library's hashtag adder. Except this time I am playing around with the number of octothorpes on display:bgawalt

i am still at 100% but that's because my coding (which, i finally am doing again after a months-long break) is for me to learn with. it's the "do the reading (incl problem sets)" of the classic three-legged stool of "go to lecture, go to discussion, do the reading."

Armin Ronacher@mitsuhiko.at

Do you still write more than 20% of code by hand?

right now im writing my own dumbed down bsky bot library because i want to know more about what bsky/atp records look like, and how to know what they're supposed to look like. a chatbot could tell me (that's how i know what i know about graphQL, eg), but that's "go to lecture" not "do the reading."

also i am extremely cheap about my hobbies and will not buy a $20/mo tokens subscription until someone is paying me $21/mo for the output

People with ChatGPT or similar apps installed on your phone: what is the upside of allowing notifications from it. What do you do with it where it would need your attention when you don't have the app open

i stopped using scala 10+ years ago (unsupported at google) and i am surprised at how well it compares here to golang. (on everything but compile time at least; scala underperforming there is not a surprise.)

Wouter van Oortmerssen@wvo.bsky.social

The first independent benchmark featuring Goose is out, making it 42% faster than the next fastest languages (C and Rust) across 50 real world inspired tasks: kostya.github.io/LangArena/#/...

oh and memory footprint of course, also not a surprise, but also not typically binding for me. i guess i just mean, i am surprised there's no runtime score penalty for using scala over golang. (wild you can be have much worse memory footprint but still run as fast?)

We're moving in Nov, so I'm back on high-volume FB Marketplace posting. And it's tempting to try out the Muse agent for it, but on any individual listing, it's not THAT much work to reply on my own. If they had a gentle supervised onboarding, "here's what Muse would say now, click ok?" I'd try that.

and of course the minute i post this i get a message from a potential buyer* asking for dimensions on this kitschy picture frame that Muse would have no way of knowing. * are you still a buyer if it's free

California should choose the sun. @xavierbecerra.bsky.social has proposed Power Hour, providing two free hours of electricity to households in the middle of the day. Wrote about how this would benefit California families and our grid for @latimes.com. ☀️⬇️

latimes.comContributor: Becerra's plan for free midday electricity would be a leap forwardBut the idea could be undercut before it even takes effect if California’s utilities commission raises every household's fixed charges.

and per cohen + delong's "concrete economics," this pays off twice, first for the pollution benefits of zero-carbon power, and second just for giving us all something to do other than "more financializing"

Stephen Judkins@stephenjudkins.bsky.social

It should be a national imperative to make zero-carbon electricity incredibly cheap

Watched The Menu (2022) last night. Can't believe I slept on it for so long, it's damn fun.

i ran `sudo apt upgrade` and got Processing triggers for ca-certificates (20260816ubuntu0.22.04.1) ... Updating certificates in /etc/ssl/certs... 0 added, 0 removed; done. in the output. probably fine

a) that movie was insane b) the people saying "see it with a big audience" are right, and im glad there was a big audience at this noon-monday showing c) the people saying "synedoche, ny" is the comp are right d) there were several moments i wanted to stand up and scream, that movie was insane

Our Alamo has a 12:30 matinee showing tomorrow, which is 3 hrs after I get my flurona boosters. I'm gonna!

i think i messed up seeing this weeks before anyone else i know will see it. i am glad i got to go in totally blind (i had "rehearsal" s2 slowly osmotically spoiled for me), but like, who do i talk to about it now. flurona vaccines have gone down fine btw.

seeing lots of posts about double feature tie-ins with other beloved movies. and my favorite movie, "the conversation," ties in so so easy.

Spooky Simonson@thedansimonson.bsky.social

that's right. I think it's a parabolic mic. that's why he's got the headphones on all the time, it's to listen to what he's picking up with it.

I’m about to watch You Can See Everything (2026) at an Alamo Drafthouse, which means I’m also having a pizza, wings, and at least one Lagunitas. Is this the best moment of my life? Listen, it could be.

I was reffing a game and a kid gave up and said "I have accepted my fate" bc his team was down 0-7 and I told him "never accept your fate." But what I meant is that you must both accept your fate and continue to rebel against it, like in the work of Albert Camus. Wish I could have that one back.

just like @maxread.info 's successful prediction of "they're going to start actively encouraging smoking again," we're going to see a full reversal on "stay in school." they're going to start encouraging dropping out of high school.

i get what they're doing, it's edpol, they are hating on the knowledge industry nerd who has never once owned a car dealership or dental supply passthrough corp. it just seems out of whack that this is (a) from the *college* republicans (b) speaking *french*.

basically pick a thing we had ad council PSAs against 30 years ago and they're going to get around to encouraging that thing.

don't know how to word with without the tone of competitiveness, but you can absolutely buy cali pols, too. i haven't price shopped it but they're available.
