Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.

Meet Backpack, your 2026 Fat Bear Week champion. Backpack is 20 years old, weighs about 1,000 pounds and got his nickname because, as a cub, he loved riding on his mom's back across the Brooks River.

this warrants more research, can I volunteer to be the next gambling addict?

ProPublica@propublica.org

NEW: ProPublica’s Jake Pearson lost $10,000 mimicking the betting patterns of a problem gambler on DraftKings to test the company’s “responsible gaming” safeguards. One week in, he was invited to become a VIP — and faced little pushback as he spiraled.

FWIW removing the willow trees was apparently a normal thing that's been taken completely out of context as many viral news stories are; the beds are very shallow and they replace the trees semi-regularly, and these ones were apparently ready to go when they were taken down 10 months ago.

popville.comWhat the Helen of Troy Happened to the Trees at the Kennedy Center!?! Willow trees gone - PoPvilleUpdate from a reader: "I was told that the garden beds the willows are in are very shallow so every few years they start to die off. One was really sick and not looking great and another fell over in ...

This girl I used to waitress with in Austin, we moved to New York together in 2003 on a literal Greyhound bus. Shared a fifth floor walk-up studio that, when it rained, had more leaks in the ceiling than we had pots and pans. We used to get drunk and smoke off the fire escape and do “sad-offs.”

me: "ah, beautiful Tuesday morning time to get to work"   my brain: "remember that time when you were young and got obsessed with the Chipmunk cover of 'Bad Day' by Daniel Powter"

when I was a kid I would see ads for “all-inclusive resorts” and wonder what was wrong with the resort industry that so many of them needed to advertise that they weren’t racist.

I feel it’s sort of underrated the extent to which a Dem Congress and/or states could (1) absolutely destroy car dealerships as a business, and (2) this would cripple a lot of GOP state and local parties

AG Andrea Joy Campbell@massago.bsky.social

My office is putting car dealerships on notice. Today, we issued an advisory asserting that Massachusetts law requires transparent pricing in ads. Purchasing a car is a significant investment, you deserve upfront pricing, not hidden fees. I'll hold companies accountable to protect your bottom line.

One year ago today, Minnesota Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were senselessly murdered in an act of political violence. In their memory, we recommit ourselves to the values that Melissa and Mark exemplified: building a kinder, more just, and loving world.

There’s been a lot of talk in this race about what makes a "real man." A man does what’s right when no one is watching. He upholds his commitments to his family and neighbors. He doesn’t lie, cheat, & steal his way through life. Real men serve others. Weak men serve themselves.

In December, SCOTUS stayed a district court ruling blocking TX from using its new maps because the lower court ruled "on the eve of an election." That district court ruling was issued 15 weeks before the TX primaries. Callais was issued *17 days* before the LA primaries.

The Downballot@the-downballot.com

This is partisanship at its rawest. SCOTUS has clamped down on lower courts for rulings that could alter maps many *months* before an election—even when those maps have been judged illegal. Here, it's rushing to let the Louisiana GOP change a map *while an election is underway.*
