In 1980, when I was five years old, my parents noticed me singing along with songs on the radio and offered to buy me some records. I chose my three favorites: 1. Another One Bites the Dust, Queen 2. Upside Down, Diana Ross 3. 9 to 5, Dolly Parton RIP Dolly

The non-profit I work for is holding a free online event this Sunday: Finding Calm in the Chaos: Understanding Your Nervous System. Our speaker is Yikai Xu, of the Culture, Emotion, and Health Lab at NYU. Please share with others who may be interested!

It’s been nearly two decades since I worked at Stanford. I used to pass through the main quad regularly. It’s usually bustling with students and tourists, so I was thrilled to capture this people-free shot of the covered walkway that encircles the Inner Quad courtyard.

The insidious way things get worse is deliberate, rewarded optimization. These steps made Hotweels measurably cheaper (or improved margins), with no measurable loss of quality. Because the quality was hard to quantify, or noisy, or deemed low value by a secondary metric (no sales impact).

Every company says it wants holistic, coherent experiences, but almost all of them align designers with specific products. I’ve spent so much of my career fixing this problem.

I don’t think designers should be assigned to product teams. Sure they can and will work on product problems but they should be assigned to strategic initiatives and programs. This assures that there is holistic systems thinking and coherence across the entire experience.

I’ve heard the song “Norwegian Wood” easily over 100 times in the last 50 years and never once did I think the narrator was setting fire to her house at the end

A huge problem with organizations is that there is often an obsession with the information architecture (the org chart) and no one deals with the interaction design (how people communicate and collaborate in order to achieve coherent goals).

Picked up The Antidote by Oliver Burkeman from the library and this quote appears right after the dedication: 😅 I was going to buy a copy of The Power of Positive Thinking, and then I thought, 'What the hell good would that do? - Ronnie Shakes

I'd planned to try out my new iPad Mini setup in a coffee shop today, but the rain in San Francisco is just too much. Instead, I'll stay home and watch Interstellar.

The "personal computer revolution" (1977-1999, roughly) lead us away from these critiques, and it's interesting to see how these 70-year-old ideas are more relevant now than ever.

*Those notions are 70 years old and yet they're also very "Big Tech," very surveillance-capitalist, and very AI-anxiety

lose-lose-lose

Folks at MIT Sloan looked at multiple studies of return to office (RTO) mandates & found they are lose-lose-lose. No reward from Wall Street for “getting tough,” an actual decrease in productivity & revenue, and loss of top talent. youtu.be/4ec_yZCWOCY...

I can't find any restaurants rated lower than 2.5 stars on Yelp. Surely there are two-star restaurants in San Francisco, right? ⭐️⭐️

To this very day, I can’t reconcile with the fact that hundreds of thousands have been laid off in tech the past few years, And we are the ones who bear the entire burden. But the ones who failed to run their businesses? All fine. They’ve still got homes, healthcare, cars, etc.

Now Walgreen's is selling itself to a private equity firm. Still angry about all the blame for store closures that fell on "poor people doing crimes". When in doubt, it's rich dudes who can't run a functional business that doesn't exploit people.

Once again, I am begging people to ask their representatives to abolish the Electoral College - a system that actively discourages millions of Americans from voting.

Stylish designers (and non-designers!), whose black T-shirt are you wearing these days? I’m looking for something heavyweight but soft that holds up well to frequent washing and wearing.

If whatever you’re doing isn’t working, don’t do it harder. → Accurate advice for every area of life (especially sex) from Martha Beck, author of The Way of Integrity.
