Heat killed a staggering 50,000 people in European cities this summer, with scientists blaming climate breakdown for two in every three of the deaths.

You know all those videos we're seeing now about coastal flooding and houses falling into the ocean? We're going to be seeing a lot more of them, from every coastline in the world, for years to come as #climate change continues to drive up sea levels and storm intensity.

"... the El Niños of recent decades are at or near the top of everything since the 1100s, and the 2026 forecast sits more than a degree above those recent events."

Will this year's record-shattering El Niño event be the strongest in a millennium? In a new piece over at The Climate Brink I review the paleoclimate literature from tree rings and corals and argue that may well turn out to be the case:

Things are slowly heating up. While they are still simmering, it's a good time to review skills for street protests. Unfortunately, everyone should read "A Demonstrator’s Guide to Responding to Gunshot Wounds" in order to be prepared for a worst-case scenario. Hopefully, you'll never need it. 🤞

Eliot Jacobson: With yesterday's preliminary Niño 3.4 sea-surface temperature spiking to a new record at 29.975°C, the y-axis was raised to 30.5°C. Meanwhile, the Niño 3.4 anomaly now sits at 3.33°C above the 1991-2020 baseline.

Wait! Is this not how it's supposed to work? "We’ll just be going about our lives with everything getting worse until one day a sufficiently horrible climate event happens on a global scale and everyone wakes up and mobilizes."

Geez, back in August I was actually hopeful it would only peak around 3.5°C. #ElNino #climate #globalwarming
