Now is *not* the moment for contrarian takes from former owners of Man City. "This will be the happiest club in the land. The players will be the best paid and we'll drink plenty of champagne, celebrate and sing until we're hoarse." They got relegated.

The Economist@economist.com

Its resilience rests not on politicians’ restraint but on the robustness of institutional arrangements, writes Frances Lee

As stirring appeals to unity go, this one is artfully phrased: "Reform are questioning people's identity. They are not like us. We are not like them. We are different."

Google here, prompted to recall Chirac - Le Pen, getting it 180° wrong. The Agnes Poirier column reposted below shares a hardening fatalism in the French commentariat about any kind of catch-all Stop-The-Fash candidate making it past the first round.

All is for the best in the best of all possible worlds so I hear.

It's important to understand who your enemies are. If you're lucky enough to live comfortably in peaceful times your enemies may be possible to ignore. If however your enemies control the state you're stuck in, things can get bleak very quick.

"Världskände" How far is Las Vegas from Aberystwyth? Seems like quite a distance.

Damn this actually goes pretty hard, front page of the business section. “I love tech, but hate the tech industry” World-renowned AI critic Ed Zitron has gone from a loud outsider to a voice that the world’s most influential media outlets listen to. And he believes the worst is yet to come.

Trafalgar Square favourite. Painted in Florence. At the time any business England had with God went through Rome.

Don’t tell Reform but here’s George slaying the dragon in Genoa, above Italian and EU flags. St George’s Cross was used as the flag of The Republic of Genoa long before it was adopted by England.

as a satire on so-called late stage capitalism how could one beat investors pouring a trillion into a company offering to wipe out humankind

Not seen this before, what a painting. He was official war artist for the British during the war but this is from three years after and it's for an American audience (he did it for Harvard and it's still there). "HAPPY THOSE WHO WITH A GLOWING FAITH IN ONE EMBRACE CLASPED DEATH AND VICTORY"

The doggerel quote underneath it, by the way, was apparently cooked up together by Sargent and the President of Harvard. the old lie, dulce et decorum est ... The American experience of WW1 was different to the European. Sargent knew this, and was canny enough to please his patrons.

The President of Princeton had been US President throughout the war, including the brief period toward the end when the US deployed troops on the Old Continent. He arrived at Versailles a conquering god. He had left office in 1921, firmly in the grip of Death, the year before this was painted.

Very different from this, dated 1919, for which he was paid by the British Government, and which reflects a different sentiment both about the Victory and about all the Death as well.

All this engagement I'm not getting. There's no way I'd enjoy it. Thankfully my posting discourages it. I win. You hear me? I win this game.

Glad about the result, but I don’t think it speaks well of us as a country that after two years of human rights violations, war crimes, naked gangster corruption, and contempt for the Constitution, he’s finally unpopular because gas got expensive.

William Rees-Mogg was the libertarian James Mill: he raised little Jacob as a project, an experiment in applied grand theory. John Stuart Mill had enough about him to have a nervous breakdown in his 20s and remake himself on his own terms. Jacob, made of much weaker material, was irreparably broken.

Otto English@ottoenglish.bsky.social

Jacob Rees-Mogg has put out a video about how everyone needs to "grow up" and put childhood things behind them and show a bit more backbone and be prepared to do things fir themselves. That's Jacob Rees-Mogg who as an adult ... quite literally went canvassing with his nanny.
