Yesterday, one guy wrote the patch that stopped 70% of the Internet from getting hacked. When asked how he felt saving the Internet he offered up this quote: "Well, my wife says that I’m emotionally dead, but I’m not. And it felt nice." Amazing. www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

theatlantic.com‘If Anything Happens to This Guy … Everyone Is Screwed’Ondřej Surý was a relatively anonymous volunteer working on PHP security. Then the internet exploded.

Today, let's not talk about deepfakes. Let's talk about good ol' fashioned zero day vulns. NYTimes on the FBI hack, "ShinyHunters said it had weaponized a zero-day, or previously undiscovered, computer bug within the Oracle PeopleSoft software." www.nytimes.com/2026/09/23/u...

Ugh. The post that had the AI generated photo is deleted now... figures ...

Let's talk about the state of AI-generated images (like this one below), and detectors. The current state of generation is damn good: we've moved beyond the "he has six fingers!" detection.

But if you wanted to do it old school, you'd do a comparison to the event and see the table settings are different than the event, and Xi didn't wear a tux. And then you'd do a reverse image search to see the first instance of this photo was posted BEFORE the event.

As for detection, Commercial generators have imperceptible watermarks (e.g., synthid from Gemini). Those a relatively easy to remove (open source removers exist). Also, as the file circulates, the various compressions distort the watermark.

So, that's why it's important to train a detector on both file transformations and watermarks. It takes a lot of compute to generate and train on this, but otherwise, people going to be thinking this photo could be real.

As someone who grew up gaming, this article hit home for me. I played turned-based strategy games, and joke that it is still how I work. Now, I watch my young child learn through puzzle and resource allocation video games (!), so, yeah. Gaming can be pretty great. Thank you @martogo.bsky.social

I have decades of experience. I have a degree in business/marketing. And yet, every time someone says "ICP" in a meeting, part of me has to think "they mean 'ideal customer profile' and not 'insane clown posse.'"

Union, union, union. God bless the Newspaper Guild, which gave me my first union card and began my lifetime of believing in the power of and need for collective bargaining. Also shame on the Washington Post for this fight being necessary.

Wearing @postguild.bsky.social red today. I was able to challenge my @washingtonpost.com firing — and win reinstatement plus back pay — all thanks to being a part of the @wbng.org Guild. Binding Arbitration is a part of our contract. This is why unions matter!!!

Bluesky should go back to invites, continue aggressive bot bans, create a Craigslist-style marketplace (since you’re more likely to buy/get services from a educated or good person on here than any other social network), and market this place like a walled garden protected from enshittification.

App I use constantly asks me for feedback. I gave answer. Rather than log it, they move it to a "MailTo" link so email client pops. Not ideal, but whatever. Then I get a Fin (AI agent) response telling me things I don't care about -- as though the problem is what I know. Annoying.

Last time, when we lost to Belgium in the World Cup, Tim Howard allowed us to walk away with some pride. Not this time.

I am not watching the USMNT vs. Belgium. I still have trauma from 2014. Tim Howard was so good . . . and they still lost. Broke. My. Heart. But, it produced this wonderful interactive from NY Times showing ALL HOWARDS BLOCKS -- www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Yesterday at work, I asked Claude to write a short story in the style of Philip K Dick about a man who couldn't pass a liveness/human check on any website / everyone thought he was a robot. Why? Because I wanted to read it. It was called, "The Verification of Arthur Pell"

Seeing the hexadecimal in my feed makes me happy and nostalgic ...

People ask me how I do my software archaeology projects So when I spent 7 months documenting Geoff Crammond’s epic game The Sentinel, I kept a diary It’s not exactly Samuel Pepys, but it does explain how I disassembled an #8bit classic: bbcelite.com/disassembly_... #retrocomputing #BBCMicro #C64
