This is what left the visible physical world at about 3pm yesterday. The two concrete spiral staircases were my favourite bit. Going to do a run of C-Type prints of this if anyone is interested. Not my best in terms of quality, but it’s does that thing it needs to do.

Yesterday during the storm I did some housework. 'I just spent an hour vacumming!', I said to my 18 year old daughter, wanting - expecting - hearty praise. 'Good for you!' She shot back instantly. Still laughing now.

I analysed 40 years of British laws and found that society was the footnote. Dirty rivers, absurd train fares, families fighting for support: all share the same flaw: governments optimise the wrong things. Could software engineering offer a fix? laurenleek.substack.com/p/theres-no-...

laurenleek.substack.comThere's No Such Thing as Society in the Objective FunctionGovernments, like the rest of us, optimise the number in front of them. I followed the formulas behind Britain's bills, rivers and public services. Here's what they leave out and how to fix it.

A long journey from Cornwall to North Wales yesterday meant dipping into a certain history podcast covering the King Arthur stories. So here's the so called King Arthur's Stone at Slaughter Bridge near Camelford in Cornwall. Happy #StandingStoneSunday and Happy half-term holiday. Pic from 2018.

A magnificent shot of some of the standing stones at Callanish on the Isle of Lewis, courtesy of Tatters. #StandingStoneSunday #StandingStoneSunday #megaliths #Neolithic #BronzeAge #Archaeology

Out of all the standing stones I've visited in recent years, this is one I keep thinking about, for its beauty, elegance and setting. At Bedd Arthur in the Mynydd Preseli / mountains, looking eastwards towards Frenni Fawr and Foel Drygarn. #standingstonesunday #sirbenfro #ancientbluesky

Thoroughly enjoyed Louise's online talk about John Aubrey's Natural History last night, organised by @vch-home.bsky.social. He was an astonishing polymath who recognised the geological age of the earth, carefully investigated dragons, witches and ghosts, and showed meticulous attention to detail.

Today's wander on the Iron Age hillfort of White Castle on the scarp slope of the Lammermuir Hills, commanding an impressive view across the Lothians to Edinburgh and Fife. Sites of several other hill forts are in view to the north, including rounded Traprain Law and conical North Berwick Law.

One of the top stile and Neolithic locations in the UK; zoom in on the base of the boulder to see the rock art.

Changed a tap fitting, fixed the freezer and the dishwasher, mopped the kitchen floor and cleaned up after the cat and the new pet mouse. Recovering by watching The Lady Vanishes on Iplayer. Happy Saturday one and all.

A trainspotter is on my train. The man opposite is quizzing him with no sense of disdain or pity - engaging with the man’s passion even though it’s not remotely his thing. I love them both. Easily the most heartening distraction I’ve had in a train in years. More of this kind of thing please!

We're watching the first ever episode of Big Brother UK and it's incredible how drab and normal everything and everyone is. The house is like a student flat with no thought for interior design at all. The men and women have separate bedrooms. No big launch show either. The episode starts 4 days in.

A painting that is 102 years old. Just incredible. Zinaida Serebriakova (Ukrainian/Russian, 1884-1967) Self-Portrait With a Brush, 1924 Oil on canvas 57 x 80 cm Kyiv National Museum

Yes, she was great. Love Radio 3 still but Saturday Breakfast was very special at that point.

I really miss Elizabeth Alker on Radio 3 of a weekend, her morning programme had such breadth and personality to it and got me through so many early starts when Max was wee. With Thinking Aloud & Free Thinking also gone this week it’s so depressing how the BBC are gutting quality radio

Arbor Low, Derbyshire. This photo was taken on a beautifully still day in May this year. Only skylarks and bees for company during the visit to this stunning place. 📷 needs a click. #StandingStoneSunday #ArborLow #PeakDistrict
