This is something that needs widely understood among left-of-center people in the days of politics as a consumer-identity. A healthy coalition has a place for people asking for longshot new ideas, contra to say, Yglesias-thought/

Padraig2112@isomorphism.net

It's fine to be a single-issue advocate! Militant support for One Thing is a necessary job that folks have to do in a democracy! Yes, even on those "less popular than the crazification percentage" issues!

Same time that needs balanced with the bigger picture of not discarding the whole because some part of it is bad. That's the overly-consumerist part, failing to recognize politics is about building coalitions with people with different but compatible priorities.

taken from a Discord with permission: "The police try to pull me over in my Tesla roadster. I press the jump-jet button to make my daring escape. A cloud of dust gets kicked up around me. When it clears, I am lying dead in a twisted pile of metal. They ticket me anyway."

this is what makes me optimistic that the next Dem admin doesn't just become immediately mired in Malaise, because Trump has left us in the rare position of having a few "make life easier and prices cheaper" levers to pull.

Boo!-per Lund@cooperlund.online

I do think that the reason to be optimistic about November is simple - the Democrats (and all their voters) have really simple answers to these, the big questions on voters minds while the GOP has some mumbling about how dangerous Iran is

On Discord today: "Shrek 2 is about lookism. Shrek 3 is about medieval succession rites when the king is a toad and the princess abdicated by marrying a monster."

[carefully crafting a letter to the deans explaining that the entirety of history from 5000BCE to 1945 is still worth hiring ~1.5 professors to teach about because actually it laid a lot of the intellectual and practical groundwork for the compressed air thrusters that have transformed our world]

My crackpot Sopranos Ending Scene theory: it was a broadcast glitch and HBO was so embarrassed over it that they NDA'd everyone to secrecy and forced a retcon.

Adding to this by saying that had Trump fizzled out as a joke candidacy in 2015, the legacy of the '16 election would be "what in god's name were Dems thinking by clearing the decks for Clinton?". I think the WI-MI-PA loss that cycle was baked in due to NAFTA bad blood.

Left Below@below-left.bsky.social

Eh, I see it as the reverse. Trump nearly lost two elections that should have been layups, and Clinton's unpopularity over NAFTA plus the 25-year smear campaign against her should have been better acknowledged by Dem leadership. She was damaged goods, he nearly lost to her anyway.

I think I'm just wired differently, but so many activists seem to think that the challenge is "getting the message out there" rather than "cutting through the noise, avoiding being ignorable".

The accurate statement of Trump's "acumen" is that he nearly bungled two elections that should've been layups and that a different Republican could have won 2020 (that was the phase where most world leaders were seeing a boost rather than the late-pandemic era).

A thought on AI p-doom stuff is that Logic is a bounded concept. The doomers assume a scenario where logic is taken to its extreme conclusions but capital-L Logic only functions within the boundaries it was created for.

The challenge of alignment is therefore a linguistic challenge, to translate the underlying meaning of a prompt to prevent undesirable outcomes, but they cast it as an almost religious threat of creating a Lovecraftian God.

That a self-training AI will just let logic run wild and create a being impossible powerful with (to us) incomprehensible motives. But Logic has limits outside of which only subjective values exist.

we actually have to destroy the alt-health industry in its entirety, much like we also need to destroy car dealerships

I guess it’s important to communicate that MAHA is fundamentally an movement by individuals to capture health care dollars by lying to people about having products and services that work
