I just updated my explainer for why I don't allow generative AI in my classrooms with a new section and an expanded section. New: Generative AI has a literal body count Expanded: Generative AI is dehumanizing CETERUM AUTEM CENSEO INTELLIGENTIA ARTIFICIALIS ESSE DELENDAM

This is so fucking lazy and stupid, to say nothing of the gutter racism we've come to expect. We have Aristotle today—FUCKING ARISTOTLE—because Islamic scholars translated Aristotle into Arabic. Algebra is literally derived from al-jabr. The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám exists.

What happens when the autistic 6yo child of an ornithologist watches too much How to Train Your Dragon? She hatches an elaborate plan to harness and ride the vultures that hang out on the roof of her school.

This is my Number One parenting hack. "Sure, buddy, I'd love to help you. Why don't you go get started while I finish this up and I'll be back in just a minute to give you a hand." Two minutes later, help is mysteriously no longer needed.

Thomas Dickerson@elfprince13.mumak.app

Turns out the perfect personal advice is often “why don’t you think just a little harder and ask me again in 2 minutes if you’re really stuck” but people don’t really want that as a product

Look, if you think that “describing what makes your child special” is a problem so hard it needs to be cracked like the Enigma machine, you suck as a parent. Like, I’d question if you even *know* your child.

David Gura@davidgura.bsky.social

cool, cool

I would never in a thousand years suggest it’s the worst parenting choice I’ve ever seen—not in a world filled with abuse and neglect. But it’s easily the most pathetic.

In fairness, the way you can tell this was probably a setup and not some pre-planned campaign moment is because Robert Barron isn't there.

In 1985, you could attend your state's public flagship with no debt by working a summer job at McDonalds. A year of tuition at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities was $1,704. The difference between then and now is that your state subsidized 90% of the cost of attendance via direct funding.

Karl Jacoby@karl-jacoby.bsky.social

The soaring costs of public universities is a political decision. When these schools predominantly served white students, they tended to be free (UC, CCNY, etc.) But as the number of students of color has increased, funding for the public universities has decreased. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/b...

It's not "bloat." It's not the fancy climbing wall. It's not the faculty. It's a simple fact: We collectively decided to stop funding higher education as a public good.

As a philosopher, any headline that begins "I started reading Plato" is instantly and automatically eye-rolling for a hundred reasons that are accurate 90-something percent of the time.* Not this one. This thing is a JOURNEY that will have you cheering for Glasse about ten seconds in.

*Reasons for Plato-induced eye-rolling: *Superficial understandings of Plato are everywhere *These are frequently wrong *Plato himself is deeply problematic *People cite Plato to seem deep and well-read, but to philosophers, he's a terrible place to start AND finish Those reasons, uh, aren't here.

At my son's High School the news class did a story about AI made posters in the school and they were removed. There are kids there who want to make this stuff, fucking let them. Art is rad if you dont have a billionaire in your ear telling you to use his AI.

Melo@letitmelo.bsky.social

That's Colin Kaepernick's whole thing he's been pushing in schools: AI storytelling programs. I dunno how The Kids are taking to it though I school funding operates at the far end of the spectrum from AI funding.

Then-State Senator Obama was the commencement speaker at my small college, so my Obama Number is two. Me => any number of college people but we'll go with the president of the college, Roger Taylor => Obama. FWIW, my Bacon Number is three, but I don't have an Erdös Number. Yet.

Blue Angel@makaylaowensby.bsky.social

Your Obama number" is basically the internet's favorite parlor game right now, and it's revealing how small our networks actually are. Six degrees of Kevin Bacon was a joke. Six degrees of Obama is a reminder that proximity to power is unevenly distributed. #ObamaNumber #SocialNetworks

Also not what got me into TTRPGs, but I once played the halfling bard version of a burnt out 80s hair metal rock star who, over the course of our adventures, wrote and produced a rock opera called Night Horses of Tyr and tamed a sewer crocodile as a mount.

UMR is the kind of place that when a student stops by and you ask how things are going, they can say something like "a fungus ate all my T-cells" and (though it's obviously a huge bummer) it's not a wildly unusual kind of thing to say.

“The problem is that Airbnb increasingly expects hosts to accept the risks while limiting our ability to protect ourselves.” Look. You work with Uber for Hotels. The WHOLE MODEL is risk transfer and you’re clutching your pearls over the transfer of risk? Get bent.

Airbnb is banning its hosts from making guests do things like “stripping the bed, taking trash offsite, or washing and putting away dishes.” The hosts....are not taking it well: www.wired.com/story/airbnb...

This is a place where an ethical theory known as “sufficientarianism” can be helpful. On this view, we don’t need to be the BEST, per se, we need to be good enough to clear some (presumably reasonably high) bar. By the same token, I don’t need the BEST doctor, I need a sufficiently good one.

Jess Calarco@jessicacalarco.com

When I post about meritocracy, I tend to get, "But wouldn't you want the best doctor if you were dying?!" And sure, I'd want a skilled doctor. But I don't believe we can objectively measure which is best. And I worry the quest for objective tests devalues less testable skills like empathy & humility

One of the advantages of using a framing like this is it allows for less quantifiable goods like “is empathetic” or “is (epistemically) humble” to be meaningfully counted. I don’t know how to measure, say, empathy with precision, but I can reasonably judge “empathetic enough.”

TL;DR: Moving from “best” to “good enough” lets us make meaningful judgments about things that are vital but difficult to quantify and avoids pissing contests about precise rankings, especially when it comes to things that aren’t the be-all-end-all but can be measured with exacting precision.
