If anyone needs a small example from the exhibition at the German Historical Museum (DHM) in Berlin, here is one: “While colonialism in its final phase seemed to offer prospects of ‘development’, Nazi rule left nothing but destruction in its wake.” 1/4

Norman Aselmeyer@aselmeyer.bsky.social

There is a deeper ideological implication to this: colonial violence is normalised as a form of oppression, whereas National Socialist violence is exceptionalised as an unprecedented form of mass murder. This distinction marginalises the genocidal dimension of colonial violence.

Colonial development was permeated by military logics, which, particularly in the context of counterinsurgency campaigns, led to mass killings, forced resettlement and collective punishment. The exhibition subsumes this violence under the paradigm of modernisation (“prospects of development”) 3/4

while Nazi violence is presented as the radical negation of societal development. The history of colonial rule demonstrates that destruction and development (presented here as opposites) were in fact intertwined. These disturbing juxtapositions (they aren't comparisons) run throughout the exhibition

Hard to imagine a clearer example of how late colonialism can be misrepresented, colonial violence downplayed.“Repressive Developmentalism”(Jeronimo) is reframed here as a prospect of development. Yet this period has been described as the second conquest of Africa (Lonsdale) for good reason 2/4

Bremen is a good place for this. Why Bremen? Because German colonialism wasn’t simply a state project dreamed up in Berlin. It grew out of trading companies, missionary societies, and other private actors in cities like Bremen. That history matters, and it needs to be acknowledged.
