RIP, Richard Tapia! I recall his recounting of his mother's teachings & I hope that I can continue to live by them, just as he did: 1) Be proud; 2) Believe that you can (sí se puede); 3) Demonstrate good work habits; 4) Strive for global excellence. Richard's testimonio: shorturl.at/7KYjK #MathSky

From Feb. 27–28, the #InnovationAcceleratorLab for Data Science and Social Impact will be hosting the Driving the Impact of Data Science (DIoDS) conference at #HMC. The #DIoDS conference will explore how #DataScience can be leveraged responsibly to serve society. More info at uqr.to/2627h.

The Mathematical Connections Seminar is something I have started and organized since coming to Harvey Mudd. If you’re ever in the area and would love to speak at the MCS, please reach out!

As part of a seminar hosted by HMC's math dept., dept. chair & math prof. Mike Orrison discussed how simple ideas from linear algebra & discrete mathematics can be used to unify different voting procedures, leading to new insights & new questions in voting theory. Photos by Lindsey Sands ’27.

HMC mathematics professor @arvm.bsky.social has received an NSF grant that will fund geometric combinatorics research. Vindas Meléndez & his students will collaborate on original problems, many drawn from Ehrhart theory, which studies the properties of polytopes. uqr.to/nsf-gcr.

New paper with awesome collaborators! "The Ehrhart polynomial of a matroid specializes to the beta invariant" with Anastasia Chavez (SMC), Galen Dorpalen-Barry (Texas A&M), Luis Ferroni (IAS & UniPi), Fu Liu (UC Davis), and Felipe Rincón (QMUL). #mathsky arxiv.org/abs/2504.15518

arxiv.orgThe Ehrhart polynomial of a matroid specializes to the beta invariantWe show that the linear coefficient of the Ehrhart polynomial of a matroid base polytope evaluated at $t-1$ is equal to, up to normalization, the $β$-invariant of the matroid. This yields a lattice-po...

This week, I recorded 4 new #VisualAlgebra YouTube videos on group actions. I heavily use the following concepts: 1. G-sets 2. Action graphs 3. Group switchboards 4. Fixed point tables. Interested? I'll give you a preview here. Please share! #MathSky 🧵👇1/16

Today would have been the 104th birthday of Brazilian mathematician Marília Chaves Peixoto, the 1st woman in Brazil to earn a PhD in math, and a researcher into the conditions for stable fluid flow over a surface. She passed away in 1961 at the age of just 39. #WomeninSTEM #MathSky #HistSci 🧪🧮

A dear friend wrote a thing about me. Thank you, @yarntheory.bsky.social, for this post but mostly for your friendship. ❤️

Me🤦🏻‍♂️: name’s not correct in the doc. My last names are V_ M_ & only shows M_ Tax assessor: I took name from deed 🤦🏻‍♂️: That has my FULL name T: *checks deed* you should’ve hyphenated. I’ll change it if you insist 🤦🏻‍♂️: No I shouldn’t have bc my name has NO HYPHEN. Yes I insist because I want MY NAME.

Last night I found out that the NSF math postdoctoral fellowship I applied for is being deleted because it does not comply with Trump’s executive orders on DEI in the federal government. I’m going to answer some FAQs and share some thoughts about this ordeal in this thread 1/n

Y’all they cancelled the NSF MPS Ascend Program after encouraging underrepresented folks to only apply to it and not both the Ascend and the MSPRF. This is astronomically fucked up for many grad students and postdocs of color in math. #MathSky

Happy Black history month, friends! Did anyone else notice that the AMS Notices completely ignored Black history month this year and (by my count) there is only one article in the entire February issue that is even coauthored by a Black mathematician? #MathSky

No matter where I am, at home or in the classroom, I am anxious and in constant fear for my undocumented family, for my trans family, for me, my partner, and all my queer family. …then I get to my office and am also like, “can someone just tell me if I can or cannot apply to this f*$king grant?”
