Seminal #drosopphila study alert! Excellent job turning over the assumption that #mushroombody odour coding is random! Definitely food for thought (pun intended)

Ivy Chan@ivychanchiwai.bsky.social

Our paper on odour categorization in the Drosophila mushroom body is now out in Cell Reports! 🎉 We found that αβ and α′β′ Kenyon cells—but not γ KCs—distinguish food-related from non-food odours at the population level. Very happy to see this work published! 🪰🧠 doi.org/10.1016/j.ce...

@asparatics.bsky.social is this the right way to study a disease? @tspiresjones.bsky.social any idea how synaptic changes could explain such immediate effects of this surgery (if real)? @elisabethbik.bsky.social any funny business? Interested in your thoughts folks. High reward with this risk

Every day we get closer and closer to plug and play #behaviour analysis. Nice GUI on this one. Would be better with compatibility for multiple animals simultaneously. But, still very glad to see developments like this, which helps facilitate analysis using low power computers. Useful.

What do the earliest organisms tell us about where life began on earth? This fantastic paper addresses this issue through analyses that expose early metabolism, & what the environment contributed to kick start it. Even if wrong it is worth reading for the clear introduction to metabolism.

Sounds like a very useful new method to me! I’m always intrigued by new and improved balancers too. I think I might even go ahead and order your new 4th balancer from @bdsc.bsky.social now! BDSC #90851 + #90852

Chasing donor backbone insertions in #CRISPR knock-in experiments is a great way to waste an afternoon (or more), unless you use a dominant marker. We like this one from the Carthew lab, in which animals containing the backbone have degenerated eyes: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... #Drosophila

Selecting an effect size for power analysis is hard. Many researchers fall back on Cohen's thresholds, but they have no empirical basis and vary wildly by field. Our new paper offers a better option: field-specific effect size distributions built from meta-analytic data doi.org/10.3758/s134...

Aging may feel gradual… but what if it’s not? In our recent paper, we tracked fish continuously from puberty until death. This gave us a unique view of how aging unfolds across the adult lifespan. 🧵

Very cool! Useful tool for #Drosophila folks. Would be great adopted by whole labs / institutions. Considering it's newness, add features? Tinkering & I don't yet see: 1) Retrospective dating / bulk stock flipping 2) Stock acquisition date 3) Column sort by chromosome 4) Reference usage citation

This #InternationalWomensDay I want to tell the story of Lilian Vaughan Morgan. I learned of Lilian this past year - what a badass. Lilian was a leading scientist when women weren't welcome in the lab, nor even the department. But she contributed immensely to the genetics of sex determination 1/n

I love these micropublications. Great way to disseminate small but impactful findings. This #drosophila study shows glutamate neurons w/ reduced ATP production related #mitochondria protein causes more day #sleep at young and after #aging. Could this explain lifespan extension (Keppley et al. 2018)?

This is a superb explanation of why we age from an evolutionary perspective, packed full of fun animal examples! It makes clear that evolution *did* optimise for lifespan (why wouldn’t it?), and that implies intervening in aging might not be that hard…
