A lovely educational thread. If I could justify a duffle or pea coat out here I would, but there's only so many winter layers I need. I guess my Mcnair mountain shirt (mcnairshirts.com) is a fitting alternative.

1/x Two of the best-known coats on any high street began as working kit for sailors on cold decks. Both carry names from my little corner of the North Sea: Duffel, a small town near Antwerp, and the Dutch word "pij". The story of the duffel coat and the peacoat. #maritimehistory

Measuring the impact of this extremely hot summer in lost GDP rather than human costs like restless nights, runs cut short, amount of brown grass trodden on, panic inducing headlines read etc is a real bummer.

Even if I've grown up on t'internet, it's never not weird and slightly thrilling when you randomly find something you've done being posted about by someone else.

Frustrating wrinkle with @ifixit.com. Need to replace a swollen battery on my phone and found that buying the battery and adhesive is more expensive than buying the kit which includes those items plus a tool kit which I've already got from a previous order.

Bit rich to spend weeks after the Gorton and Denton byelection bashing the Greens talking points and then claiming some of them as your own. I agree with what he's saying here but it would ring more true if he'd been saying this before the attacks on Iran...

I’m not a big user of BlueSky (yet), but if anyone sees this I’m looking for work. I’m a front-end developer, with a focus on low-carbon, design-led, accessible, websites — often using Astro and headless CMSs like Storyblok. I’m open to freelance or possibly the right perm role 🤞

Winter is improved if you put your veg trimmings and herb stalks in a bag in the freezer and when it's full you make it into a stock for a banging minestrone. Omnivores can and should add chicken bones & parmesan rinds to the bag too. Extract value & nutrition from what seems like waste.

This place needs some Innocuous Discourse pronto. Quote this with a take that’s not political or aggressive

While kneeling by a lake to take a photo, the man stood next to me said "are you going to have a drink?" to his dog. I looked up and told him I wasn't thirsty and he took a beat and told me he was talking to his dog.

This sucks. I often find myself sharing @hf.co articles and initiatives when looking for more balanced take than the usual AI hype. Deeply disappointed to see this happening and their silence in the face of questions from @404media.co. Do better.

Hugging Face is now hosting 5,000 AI image generation models of real people that were banned from Civitai due to pressure from payment processors. The company is not responding to requests for comment or showing interest in seeing this data. www.404media.co/hugging-face...

I am slightly floored by this article. I've read and listened to a lot of reporting about GenAI platforms aiming for engagement over accuracy and speed running the issues social media platforms have. The latest @techwontsave.us covers the topic nicely and is a great chaser to the article.

Yer da is trying to print the internet again... ...and it looks gooooood. Feeling slightly mindblown by this Picallili article about controlling how your site looks when printed. Fascinating stuff from @vale.rocks via @bell.bz's excellent Index newsletter and site. piccalil.li/blog/printin...

Loved this snarkily accessible puncturing of the AI bubble. The rest of JD's writing on ESC KEY .CO is well worth your time too.
