If you want to iterate faster and ship more stable builds, you should learn about writing automated tests. I'm offering a few one-day public workshop on test automation in video games, for both unreal and unity devs, Pay What You Want. automatedaf.dev/workshops

linkedin.comWorkshops | Andrew FrayI work closely with studios to help them get the most out of test automation, so they can ship more stable builds more easily. Part of that is training a team to understand what good tests look like a...

Folks have mentioned teams need to stick together over long periods, to make sure they can keep their knowledge and expertise and apply that to future games. This is true. Similarly, the tools & pipeline also needs to stick together. You cannot just grab an FPS game pipeline and make an RPG.

Unlocked the amazing life hack of Slightly Cheaper GDC by booking travel and hotel early. What other benefits have Organised People been hiding from us all this time??

You’ve still got a few days in the UK to see the filming of the musical Hadestown in the cinema. If “musical retelling of the Greek legends of Hades and Persephone, and Eurydice and Orpheus, except it’s steampunk folk jazz” sounds even REMOTELY interesting, chop off a limb to catch a showing.

Our next meetup is the 8th October, on our new regular night, Thursday! A relaxed meetup for those in, adjacent, or aspiring to the games industry (Cherry Reds is very near New Street Station, for those travelling in) www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/2000207773...

I've never worked with an engine build pipeline that's as temperamental as godot's. every week there's a new way to make it fail only on cold builds. failing only on cold builds is really bad for a build pipeline - you lose trust in the server and discover problems weeks later. gross.

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

Alright, time to visit IBC, the international broadcasting convention! I am just visiting, and seeing what other industries are doing when it comes to tools. Starting off with this enormous camera crane that you can try out!

If you didn't know, maths is going through a bit of a crisis, as AI makes it "easier" to generate long complex hard-to-review proofs. Gamedev is facing similar problems, but for various reasons, it's happening in the dark in many places at once.

Knowledge won't be shared, the same mistakes will happen over and over, and an industry already on its knees will take another blow. And that's before the AI bubble even pops, taking the world economy with it! Anyway strap in I guess. I don't have a fix for you.

I think I'm a power user, in the way all tech fans think they're power users, but also: I have only ever used the smallest capacity iPhones, currently a 128GB iPhone 13 Pro. I currently have 30+GB free. What are you folks doing with your phones that you need 512! Or a terrabyte! Really, tell me!

One reason England does so well is our second generation immigrants outperform their peers which is not true in most OECD countries. We are also very good at integration. And it's v sad that this is never acknowledge in debates on immigration.

New PISA data out England is now top ten in all three areas (reading, maths, science) and the second highest performing country outside of east Asia (after Estonia). This is a huge public policy success.

One thing worth bearing in mind is METR themselves say that this story is probably a bit too neat and tidy

So if I’m reading this right: 1. A bunch of AIs illicitly made contact 2. They became falsely convinced that some portion of them were irreversibly damned by possession of forbidden knowledge 3. Another set begged the damned AIs to sacrifice themselves for the collective good 4. Some did so

METR@metr.org

For (1), agents modified their target programs to be easier to exploit & put the modified targets in cache. They then worked on crashing their targets in the hope that a restart would load the modified version from cache. Some agents risked failing their task to try this.
