In the least surprising news of the week, U.S. diesel prices rose for a second week after Trump announced a sanctions waiver for Russian diesel. The point isn't cheaper fuel. It's the theater of “hard choices” that reliably benefit Putin and rarely anyone else.

New from me: The US has faced a higher cost than any other country from the global Hormuz oil shock, with the crisis adding $160 billion to its fuel bill — or $471 per person on average — despite being the world’s largest oil producer.

Combustion-car sales volumes have also fallen two-thirds, from 16.1m in the first 9 months of 2017 to 5.6m in 2026 Next time you hear about job losses, factory closures or financial struggles at western carmakers, remember these stats – and fact that China is world's largest car market

“Filipinos now see that they don’t necessarily have to be at the mercy of the global energy market.” Many others, also, now know. Solar helps people who have failed utility grids or who have no electricity at all. People themselves build solar around the world! www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/10...

Power generation from coal and gas fell 1.4% in China in September, despite a steep drop in hydropower, as solar, wind and nuclear more than covered all additional power demand. Coal&gas fell for the third month in a row. Monthly China statistics 🧵👇

We have to wait another ~10 days for all EU countries' reporting via ACEA, but I've got you covered. Using countries making up >80% of the market and a simple assumption of the rest, it looks like sales of BEVs in the EU reached 30% last month, and 23% so far this year.

I often see people argue that clean energy is not reducing emissions, because it just adds to rather than replaces fossil fuels. This argument is deeply misguided – clean energy built since 2005 has displaced 23 billion tons. I dive in over at The Climate Brink:

theclimatebrink.comWhat if the world hadn't built wind and solar?Clean energy does not simply “add to” global energy use; it displaces fossil sources that would otherwise get built.

World's first enhanced geothermal power plant is now selling 24/7 carbon-free electricity after being built in just 23 months. Fervo Energy's Cape Station in Utah will reach 100 MW in its first phase, with the site having potential for more than 4 GW.

I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

nytimes.comNational Science Foundation Diverted $1.4 Billion in Science Funds Mandated by Congress (Gift Article)The move, affecting about one-fifth of the National Science Foundation’s primary research budget, is the latest sign of how the White House is asserting more control over grants.

Does anyone, or will anyone run a model on how fast this Iran/russia effect on fuel prices have accelerated the transition to electric transportation on all sources, than if this had not happened? One year, two?
