devastated to learn there's no level of drawing ability where the thing you're drawing becomes real and you get to hang out with it in real life

when i was a kid, i had very treatment-resistant acne and i didn't really care. like i didn't love it but whatever. now as a grown man, if i get one zit, I walk around like i'm the phantom of the opera

the first seven episodes of the CARRIE show were alright but that eighth one was such a mess, dude. if you didn't want to make Carrie, then make something else.

i guess i don't want to say too much because it's relatively new so i won't go into specifics, but it seems there's a recent aversion to tragedy in narrative because tragedy is sad and terrible, but that's very much the point. you should feel bad about it because it was terrible

unasked-for opinions about the films i saw at ANIMATION IS FILM 2026: - Ghost - end of night was cerebral and slow to open up to the viewer, and while it had some compelling visuals occasionally, i think it shook out to anime Catcher in the Rye which ultimately wasn't my favorite

- aaand lastly Cherry and Virgin was a movie about two virginal adult artists trying to figure out how to come together as a couple. The story's cute and a little gross (in the human way) but it's formally audacious and with a lot of character and that really elevated it

all in all, pretty solid selection this year. occasionally I see one I really don't jive with at all but all six of them were either quite wonderful or at the very least, had their moments. i love cartoons.

- The Violinist was the other standout at the festival. Visually it wasn't one of my favorites, but the story was heartbreaking and informative, particularly about the pacific theater of WWII, and it was the only movie this year that had me sobbing. big recommend

- Viva Carmen was an adaptation of Carmen, and visually it was magnificent. One of my top 3 to look at and experience on a sensory level. Such fun music, design and animation. The narrative itself was fun and effective but the visual feast was where it's at for me on this one.

- Avatar Aang was an entirely servicable story elevated beyond belief by the design, story and animation teams who made the shit out of that movie. it looks so unbelievably good and I want to thumb through it frame by frame

- Jim Queen was maybe the standout for me this weekend. Funny and gross and about how fucking ridiculous it is to be a gay guy. the movie was designed and moved like a dream. The poster and thumbnail made me think the movie wouldn't be for me, but in execution it absolutely sung

to piggyback: you would be amazed how much you can do w/ less. 3s and 4s aren't even "poor" animation quality necessarily, especially if the posing's good. people think everything should be on 1s or that everything should be a series but a short film done with strong posing and less frames is great

Not every project has to look like Disney or Miyazaki. If you have to cut corners (animate on 3s or 4s, simplify the designs to near stick figures, use public domain music, voice all the characters yourself, etc) go ahead. Besides, anything’s better than ai.

if you want my nuclear take, I think things done on 1s can look sort of mushy and lack impact. obviously this isn't a rule but it's also not the solution and it's certainly a lot harder

some thumbnail process. I like to thumb comics in storyboard pro, a workflow i dont recommend for anybody who doesnt already spend all their life in that program. i do it because the infinite canvas makes VP finding a breeze but honestly i do it because i feel comfortable to explore there

so i’ve posted CLUTCH stuff piecemeal over the last year, but here’s the sum total of the example pages for the pitch. for comprehension’s sake: pgs 1 and 2 are sequential, 3-8 are sequential, and 9-10 are sequential, done this way so as to give an overview of various vibes in the book.

Rep. Delia C. Ramirez has introduced a bill that would abolish not just ICE, but the DHS altogether, repealing the 2002 law establishing the agency and replacing it with one focused on protecting civil and human rights.

in my adaptation of CARRIE, i would simply have nobody ever being mean to Carrie. then she won't have to get psychic and kill everybody. narrative solved

in my adaptation of CARRIE, Carrie simply moves to Manhattan and makes friends with a ragtag but lovable group of 20 somethings who work various service jobs while they find themselves and often gather at the local coffeehouse near their apartment

incredibly important advice. i think an additional fringe benefit to your emotional well-being is these dedications to yourself and your personhood can stave off the gordian knot of tying your entire self-worth to your unsustainable productivity drive which is just a journey to infinite pain

I end undergrad talks with the annoying 'comics advice' of: you have to sleep, you have to eat, you have to move your body in whatever way works for you, you have to engage with the world outside of your desk and outside of comics entirely. sleep is the foundation!! you can't compromise on that!!

every now and then my cut Prowlatron boards from Earthspark make the rounds on Japanese and Korean Transformers fan twitter and it warms my heart

to people finding me from my takes online: hi, i'm josh. i work in animation and comics. when I'm not doing that, i'm drawing gay guys for fun

hi, i’m Josh and im a story artist (santiago of the seas, transformers: earthspark, lackadaisy, nda things) and BG designer (bee and puppycat) in animation! 💌 joshmckenzi@gmail.com 💻 joshmckenzieart.com

you may have noticed that animation has never been more in-demand & in the zeitgeist and yet, seemingly, never have media conglomerates been less willing to produce it. you may also notice these guys get multimillion dollar severance packages after they gut a studio. there is probably no connection

Skydance now owns Nick, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Comedy Central, and MTV, effectively ending US TV animation as we know it. Countless jobs will be lost, and fewer new shows will be created. An apocalyptic scenario for cartoons, yet it's maybe the 5th-worst thing about the Paramount-WB merger!

i was recently talking to a close friend who spent some of her summer at a lesbian summer camp and got to meet other women of all ages and backgrounds and hear from them and their stories, and wow i felt the ache inside for real for that one

as a long, long, longtime fan and participant in Posting, there are many many posts that rattle around in my skull but I think the one that surges through my consciousness the most often is the "jealousy professor" fragment of the impeccable Koko tweet

making a Fire Emblem OC that appears in every game like Anna does, except my guy’s there to do S-rank supports with the guys i like the most

ok so after 30 bazillion years, I've updated my ipad and I think Procreate's changed how they're handling my preferred brush and I'm not loving it!! i wish i didn't do this!!
