UDA (Unified Data Architecture) and Upper domain modeling language at Netflix. Former , W3C/MIT. RDF expert who prefers Scala over Java. One Piece nerd.
This post introduces the foundations of UDA (Unified Data Architecture) as a knowledge graph, connecting domain models to data containers through mappings, and grounded in an in-house metamodel, or model of models, called Upper.

Headed to Tokyo to give a keynote at Data Engineering Summit 2026! I’ll share what the UDA team at Netflix has been cooking up lately, and try to answer a deceptively simple question: when we move data between systems, what exactly are we moving?

I created Calico to scratch an itch: what if I could use Cats Effect and FS2 to build delightful, reactive webapps?
Join my interactive lab and let's find out together! I am excited to teach you about fibers and monads and we will watch them come to life in our browsers.

In this hands-on lab by Arman Bilge, you’ll create widgets in pairs and explore IO, Resource, Stream, Signal, and fibers through real-time experimentation.
A practical introduction to the Typelevel stack and functional frontend development.

🛠️ sbt 2.0.0 is released!
sbt 2.0 is a new major series of sbt, based on Scala 3 constructs and Bazel-compatible cache system. many thanks to Scala Center, Anatolii Kmetiuk (new maintainer), Adrien Piquerez (alumni), and other volunteers like Kenji Yoshida

Giancarlo Guizzardi advances the fields of #semantics, #ontology, and #conceptualModeling with his work on the Unified Foundational Ontology (UFO), the OntoUML pattern language, and #explainableAI. Fun conversation. Hope you enjoy it, too.

Ora Lassila and @ktk.netlabs.org lead the W3C working group that is tackling the #RDF reification problem. RDF 1.2 introduces the reifier, which lets you annotate individual graph relationships with provenance, confidence, and source.
knowledgegraphinsights.com/rdf12/
The stream/table duality also applies to RDF Datasets. Each named graph can be seen as a keyed message on a log-compacted topic, with the graph name as the key.

Republicans are using kids as a smokescreen for what Big Tech lobbyists want: a national surveillance program to harvest our data with zero protections for people and their privacy.
We must fight this dangerous expansion of surveillance technology.
The Typelevel Foundation was determined to be a 501(c)(3) public charity!
This is a testament to the intellectual merit and educational value of our community's contributions to functional programming. Congratulations!

Mayor Jacob Frey: "They are already trying to spin this as an action of self defense. Having seen the video myself, I want to tell everybody directly that is bullshit."
I was recently interviewed by Ashleigh Faith on her IsA DataThing PODCASTs. We somehow went deep into domain modeling and the constraints that shaped Upper, Netflix UDA's conceptual framework.

Brilliant analysis of how the far right acts as one international party and that it's dangerous to respond to them only nationally while they already think and act transnationally.
📣 It gives me great pleasure in welcoming @armanbil.ge of #typelevel to #BayAreaScala#meetup with a highly anticipated talk 👉 Calico: my love letter to the Resource monad

At Netflix, @alex.bertails.org and his team have adopted #RDF to build a Unified Data Architecture (UDA) and a #domainModeling language, Upper, that let them quickly and efficiently share complex #data with their internal engineering customers.

China last month banned companies from purchasing Nvidia’s H20 chips, signaling a breakdown of a corporate strategy designed to navigate complex geostrategic tensions, Leevi Saari writes.
BFM:

To most data architects, “An ontology is an explicit description of a conceptualization” is about as useful as “A monad is a monoid in the category of endofunctors” is to most programmers.
"REST" is our industry's most successful collective delusion: everyone knows it's wrong, everyone knows we're using it wrong, and somehow that works better than being right.

"It is kind of, in a way, trying to create a second class of U.S. citizens" - for many of us who immigrated here and became citizens, the message is clear.
Small businesses are the backbone of this city! We should do more to make sure that the many great small businesses we have in San Francisco are supported. Let’s make sure that they remain in our community. Thank you Vas Kiniris, for speaking with my team.
AOC: "On this point of tax on tips, as one of the only people in this body who has lived off of tips, I want to tell you a little bit about the scam ... the cap on that is $25,000 while you're jacking up taxes on people who make less than $50,000 across the US ... while kicking them off the ACA."
I worked at Planned Parenthood.
They diagnose cancers while still treatable. They help women decide what birth control works for them. They help those working through mental health challenges.
Defunding them just harms people who already struggle to find places to get care.
The piece of code I am the most proud of is called Dupliclef. I wrote it for my dad to be able to save his USB keys and hard-drives. He is old school, but he religiously preserves his data and emails locally by cliquing on the small icon in his Dock. The script then detects the hard drives and keys.
Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.
We have this super cool new data architecture in Netflix Content and wanted to share it today but we had a technical problem, so the article will only be shared on the Netflix Engineering Blog tomorrow. I hope.🤞
I will be damned if I allow a bunch of Confederate-waving January 6th apologists give the American people a lecture on flag waving.
There is ZERO reason to enter an argument about patriotism with people who still worship traitors to America 150+ years later.
They. Are. Breaking. The. Law.
The top 1% makes about a million dollars a year, probably without working at all — just passive income off assets.
An extra 79k is not even noticeable for them. It’s less than what they pay in fees to asset managers.
But $79k would be life changing to anyone in the bottom 80%.
New, from me:
The DOGE project was sold as tech disruptors who would revolutionize government. To try to understand why DOGE has failed, I point to lessons that other technologists who worked in government learned, but DOGE ignored. 🧵

This is what oligarchy is about.
While planning massive cuts to Medicaid, the Republicans are proposing to provide another $235 billion in tax breaks to the top 0.2% of households through an increase in the estate tax exemption.
The very rich get richer. The poor lose health care. Outrageous.
THE most important political issue facing us now is our corrupt campaign finance system & Citizens United.
As long as Musk, AIPAC & crypto money can buy politicians, we’re not living in a democracy.
We must end billionaire control of our politics and publicly fund elections.
