Fun facts about Black Beth (returning in this year's Treasury of British Comics Annual from @2000ad.bsky.social) When artist Dani and I first revived her in 2018, we based her on '60s Goth Queen Barbara Steele.

Wanting to avoid your standard D&D theme-park fantasy world, I based Beth’s world on Moorish-era Spain, mainly to make it feel unique, but also as a nod to Beth’s legendary original artist Blas Gallego.

I keep a stash of Black Beth reference pics of Almería and the Tabernas Desert in southeastern Spain where they filmed all those Spaghettis in the ‘60s as well as the original Arnold Conan. I want Black Beth to have a woozy, sun-baked feel, like a Harryhausen Sinbad.

Durham Red easter eggs and inspirations: a guide for current readers of @2000ad.bsky.social Given that Red wanted to be in a glitzy neo-noir story this time, these are a combination of keystone noir, ‘60s Vegas culture, and weird bunny lore…

Coltt Twotees was inspired by Thelma and Lousie-era Brad Pitt (described at the time by one thirsty critic as possessing a smile that could put feminism back 30 years), but with the brain of Keanu Reeves in Bill and Ted.

And this was the only non-filthy image from the opening page of Episode Five (out in the UK this week).

The clan's look was partly inspired by the King in Speedway (1968).

I told artist Ben Willsher that Donnie’s dad needed to be Watership Down's General Woundwort played by Lawrence Tierney in Reservoir Dogs.

Donnie’s thatch of blond hair was based primarily on Alice in Wonderland’s Mad March Hare, the motif of straw in one’s hair popular Victorian shorthand for a person who sleeps on a straw-bed in an asylum. Resemblance to any other raving straw-haired lunatic alive or dead is, um, purely coincidental…

Wolkin – Christopher Walken? I mean, come on!! King of New York? True Romance? How did no one get this one?! He’s… LITERALLY! Staring you… In. The FACE!

Motel Largo: A reference to John Huston’s 1948 noir starring Bogart and Bacall. Red has a copy of Red Harvest in her luggage, the classic low-key apocalyptic novel by Dashiel Hammett about feuding gangsters. Himes Boulevard: Namecheck for the great Chester Himes, author of A Rage in Harlem.

The Widow was inspired by Rocky IV-era Bridget Neilsen along with some superhero or other. I forget which one.

This is what Eisner meant about comics turning letters into images. But it’s self-effacing. Most readers’ eyes would glide over these sound effects without realising just how much they’re immersing you that little bit more into the story-world.

Letterers are truly among the unsung heroes of comics and Simon’s one of the best in the biz.

The letters in the ricochet ‘pchow’ are narrow and jumpy. They feel high-pitched and fidgety, like shrapnel pinging in all directions.

My fave is this wavering line as Red sniffs the air. The letters are soft and organic, and that wavering tail conveys her probing the air.

More Durham Red in @2000ad.bsky.social this week. We based Red’s jacket and skirt on Sharon Stone’s powder-blue Courrèges number from Casino (1995) as it went with the story’s ‘60s Vegas aesthetic. But with added stolen combat boots!

Bugsy Seigel’s famous Vegas hotel was, of course, The Flamingo. We went with the Peacock. And how can a gangster called Bugsy be anything else but a mutant rabbit? Whose surname is a famous rabbit dish. This stuff writes itself, I swear.
