Socialists: let’s unite for the good of society! Capitalists: the socialists are trying to tear us apart! … Anyway, only extreme individuality is how you can succeed in life. Put your self first.

Her Apollo software was built to expect the unexpected, and on Apollo 11 it recognized an overload mid-landing and kept the critical tasks running. Every postmortem, every bug tracker, every “let’s make sure this never happens again” carries a little of her in it. Thank you Margaret Hamilton. 🚀

@deno.land You just released desktop APIs 3 months ago. I love using the runtime & have been building on it for years. It’s what I reach for when building net new. I don’t reach for Node anymore. I will never reach for Bun. If anyone can keep the project running, please organize and contact Ryan.

Nando v Movies and Captain Midnight losing the media literacy plot with Lanterns was not on my 2026 bingo card. We white men absolutely suck. Unless you are one of two incredibly gifted writers who stepped aside for Vanessa Baden Kelly, possibly the most important voice in the writers room.

The climax arrives, not with a bang or a fight with fists and lasers and light constructs. We expect that because we have been conditioned for violence like John. It arrives with grace, forgiveness, repair, and healing. It comes with acceptance that WE must choose our own path.

“In brightest day, in darkest night, I'll embrace my fear, I'll do what's right. I choose this ring, I choose this fight… In service to this lantern's light.“

Kelly wrote John’s childhood as one of abuse and twisted love and violence. His parents prepared him for a life of power and force, and obedience to power. He was conditioned to bear violence on others at the unquestioned order of a cosmic authority.

What we get for a climax is not the resolution of Hal’s murder or the Manhunter plot. Those mysteries are the narrative push for the real plot: can men overcome their social systemic programming and become their true, best, whole selves?

Kelly wrote the definitive John Stewart origin story. It was an incredible gift that set up the rest of the season, and is the narrative fulcrum on which the entire season pivots. If you fail to understand John’s childhood, you will miss the point of the final episode.

I’m frustrated by the response to Lanterns by some popular internet critics. The ending did not “fall apart”. It was not “anticlimactic”. It subverted your expectations about what a dramatic climax could be and offered you healing, forgiveness, repair, platonic love, and pivotal character growth.

“She asked the powers at NASA to let her add a safeguard to prevent that error in a real flight, and they laughed it off as too unlikely… When an astronaut did make that blooper during the Apollo 8 mission, it caused necessary navigational data to vanish, and they called Hamilton in to get it back.”

i was fortunate enough to profile Margaret Hamilton in 2019. A really kind and curious person. This was my favorite story she told me:

Just got my next leather from The Leather Guy! A beautiful chili red oil-tanned pull-up leather for my son’s moccasin slippers. A pretty pink pebbled aniline leather for daughters slippers. The REAL steal was some clearance patent leathers! I’ll be making some little girl shoes and accessories. 🩰👛

like I suspect many of you on This Website, I think a core reason why I find Eliezer Yudkowsky and his rationalist and effective altruist satellites so intensely annoying is because I had a VERY similar “being a super weird, pretentious, hyper-literate kid” experience - I just, you know, grew up.

I am experiencing the Packer game tonight vicariously through other peoples posts. I feel this is an adequate level of disappointment to endure.

It may also be turned off at the whole global WIFI settings section of iOS 27. I don’t know if this also changes per-SSID, but it’s an option I also want turned off.

When my ear hurts and has some drainage, I will seek a diagnosis of “ear infection”. Nobody bats an eye. The way our world stigmatizes neurodivergence and mental health meant I never sought a diagnosis for ADHD until I had destroyed my marriage and had nothing left to lose. I’m lucky she stayed.
