What if the purpose of "smart" appliances isn't really to improve customer experience, but it's to make something that the factory that's making the bulk of the appliance can't copy easily?

I’m totally onboard with the spirit of this, but I do have a good use of my dehumidifier’s WiFi. Rather than simply relying on relative humidity, an automation maintains a set dew point in my basement. (RH and temp kindly provided by the dehumidifier.)

I wholeheartedly despise the push of “smart” technology where everything has to have either an app, subscription service, or forcibly need WiFi connection to work. Why should I need internet to use a lightbulb or washer & dryer

I'm pretty sure there is some amount of a kinetic isotope effect in dehumidification, so you probably could enrich heavy water through repeated dehumidification/humidification cycles. It would just be terribly inefficient.

Months ago, I went to a small restaurant. They said they couldn't make food because their order-taking software was down. I had cash, and they could not make food because they depended on a remote computer operating properly. xkcd readers may understand why this is dumb, but the general public?

I keep saying it; air gap yo' shit. I don't mean it in the way of 'take all of your computers and servers offline,' I mean it in the way that 'some things *just don't need* a software update'.

As much as I would love that, there are several appliances made to not function at all with no internet, and I don't just mean computers... My grandparents lived out on a farm with nothing better than dial up until 2020, when my dad tried to get them a new DVD player it wouldn't work without wifi.

makes me think of my "Smart" LG fridge with Wifi connection but it doesn't even report the actual temperature in the fridge, you can only change the settings.

That is my old person take. I just want some things to work. Not everything needs bluetooth or wifi access. I just want my fridge to keep things cold, and my bathroom vent to remove steam. I don't want my bed to need updates.
