Sadly, the current administration in the united states has thoroughly mixed religion and politics. Political goals for an individual typically align with their internal religious goals as it is. I think its unlikely to find a conversation about politics that wont include religion or vice versa.

My father is a Catholic deacon and I attended Catholic schools. Taught by some priests and lay brothers. I’ve known myriad practicing Catholics. I’ve known far fewer who lived the word. None as well as Francis.

Wow. I was raised RC and turned from it at age 12 bc of view of women. When I later understood homophobia and IRS crimes it confirmed my decision. This deceased Pope and this Vatican clearly are not the RC church I knew. Respect for the powerful statements this funeral makes.

I pray those who choose the next pope do not allow themselves to be influenced by global politics and instead use their hearts to select a man who has the compassion and understanding that Pope Francis had.

We can only Pray and ask God to give them Wisdom and Knowledge. I believe that the Holy Spirit touched Pope Benedict's heart causing him to resign because God wanted Pope Francis to lead. Kudos to Benedict for having the courage to do God's will.

I don't think there's any potential Pope that could match Pope Francis's compassion. No offense to Catholics but this is still the Catholic Church, even if the last 12 years had a leader who supported everyone, the 1500 years before were hyper conservative.

Essentially, yeah. I'm not religious but I fuck with Jesus as a person, because he was a compassionate man, just like Pope Francis was. My grandma always told me that the prophets of any given faith never taught the actual religion itself, just love.

There is no elective abortion and thinking along those terms is part of the problem. Women never go into an abortion lightly and judgement from religious people on a medical procedure is sickening.

Pope Francis was a Jesuit. I've often felt that Jesuits, if not actually atheists, had some doubts, but thought Jesus was a wise man whose teachings they felt they could dedicate their lives to.

There are a lot of Jesuit scientists, including in the fields of astrophysics and the environment. They are quite able to embrace all scientific knowledge, if only as a way to better understand their God. Social justice is a big deal to them and they see science as a way of achieving that.

The world was made better by his presence. He wasn't perfect, and certainly no organized religion is, but generally his preachings helped more than hurt. We need to stop following people that don't improve the world. Hoping the next Pope follows his lead.

I agree. I am a recovering Catholic. I no longer practice. But Francis was a man who lived the teaching of Christ like no other Pope. He eschewed the fancy robes and opulent apartment for a simple robe and room. He ministered to the downtrodden. I will miss him as a beacon of light on earth.

I went to Rome last year & stayed near the Vatican, there were homeless encampments around St. Peter’s Sq, we were told there was talk a/b clearing them but the Pope wanted to help them. There was also a mentally ill man making a scene at St. Peter’s Basilica & our guide said “oh he’s here everyday”

Having seen an item on tv giving a synopsis of the pope’s life. I couldn’t help thinking he stood for most of the things Republicans are trying to legislate against, or label as woke. Not that they’ve given a definition of wokism. But I like to think before I open my mouth I’m accurately informed !

This pope was bigger than either of them. They do not have the power to disgrace Pope Francis. His spirituality cannot be diminished by them any more than Jesus could be disgraced by his enemies.

Many of the Cardinals were picked by Francis himself. Francis understood that all who need mercy deserve mercy, he also realized the papacy had grown un-Christ like, and took steps to correct that. The Catholic church must evolve to be inclusive to survive the next century.
