The real thing is once you get into that territory you're competing with PCs that can play a lot more games and don't lock you into a platform. That's why the nextbox is a handheld, they think it will distinguish it from PC. Unlikely, imo.

people have paid that much (or more) for consoles in the past, adjusted for inflation. but you lose the “every middle-class kid has one” market in the process—and like the ps5/unlike the series x, the “adult enthusiast” market will have to believe it’s worth the money

I hear you—but right now the same forces that might make ps6es $1,200 are making gaming pcs $3-4K. people who’ve been waiting 4-5 years “for prices to come down” to upgrade their aging boxes might actually jump on a $1,200 xbox that can play much of their current library much better

fair! also why if they could make enough of them, the steam machine would still have serious legs despite the price hike lol

Probably! I also think you don't really need a 5090 to run stuff unless your whole thing is AAA games. Not a ton of stuff targeting cutting edge these days. Is building a pc still gonna be expensive? Yes. But it will be competitive with a $1200 xbox handheld.
