Sony has addressed multiple questions regarding its decision to end physical disc production for PS5 games in January 2028. CFO Lin Tao reasoned that a large part of the business was already digital, and by discontinuing discs, “we don’t see that there will be any negative impact.”

Another question asked about the impact on retailers. "Without discs in the package, there’s a code included. That’s how we sell in North America," Tao explained. "There are regional characteristics, and for each regional partner, we try to have thorough dialog so we can have a win-win situation"

do they seriously think people are going to want to buy a code in a box that becomes literally useless as soon as it's redeemed do they actually, actually believe that

i wish them all the best with whatever they're doing but i'm not coming. which is a shame! i've owned and loved every playstation right from the very first one, but i just can't see any point to what they're doing now

I have owned every Playstation console including Pro models and VR headsets. PS5 will be my last if the future is all digital, with poor consumer protections. The fact Sony think they can grow their business (x to doubt) by going all-digital is nonsense.
