Visitors to the US are on track to drop by almost two million year-on-year. “We’re the only major country in the world losing visitation,” the head of the US Travel Association said. “It’s mind-boggling.” www.semafor.com/article/09/2...

“We’re the only major country in the world losing visitation,” the head of the US Travel Association said. “It’s mind-boggling.” Yeah, that's a real head-scratcher. 🙄

Eh. It sucks to be a Central Asian diplomat, especially with China cleansing your co-ethnics across the border. Maybe that's not what you meant by "closest allies." But if the US were disappearing Canadians inside US borders as a matter of policy, the threat to sovereignty would already be there.

Oh I didn't think you were saying that. And yes, not threatening their main sources of tourism is a more tailored way to express what they're doing here. (Actually, I'd be curious to know where most visitors to China come from! Like... how many Taiwanese visitors are there?)

I think we've eventually tracked down most of them and gotten them back and it's not happening as frequently now as it was a year ago but the United States has most definitely attempted to disappear multiple Canadians inside U.S. borders as a matter of policy.

Dude, people are afraid for *their own safety* if they were to visit the US, because of trump. It's not hypocrisy to avoid a country whose federal government just murdered a tourist in Texas and will not face any accountability for it.

Yeah, there are real stories making people not want to visit for sure. I just would be concerned with visiting some other countries too like China. Great people, and fascinating history, but the political situation not too good.

It’s also worth noting this entire discussion is about the delta, not the absolute numbers. China has not undergone tourism death on a COVID scale. USA has. What’s changed in those places? Because that’s the topic.

Semafor is cleaning up Axios’ mildly censorious reporting of Trump failure. Axios reported it was “MOSTLY self-inflicted” - Semafor changed this to a “partly self inflicted”. It is true that “mostly” is also “partly” but it is sad that Semafor couldn’t be as hard on Trump as Trump-fawning AXIOS.

Who could have foreseen tourism would be dampened by random detentions of visitors from abroad, thought-policing foreign guests’ phones and an underlying culture of casual violence with guns permitted every-damn-where? I mean, who’da thunk?
