Is there any way to turn off Gemini from automatically responding when you search on Google? I've tried and can't figure out how to do so, if it's possible at all.

I've been checking the source of quotes for my forthcoming book, and the performance of Gemini is extraordinary. I paste the quote into Google, and Gemini will barge in with the wrong answer over and over again. It's not an occasional thing - it's reliably wrong. Very odd.

Not directly, but there are a few hacks, but many of them have downsides! This is the way I have found works best. In uBlock origin on Firefox, I have this custom filter. This blocks the AI summary box as if it were an ad. But it does not block other google summary boxes, like for maps or flights.

another approach is to make your default web search engine a custom google search engine that ends with &udm=14, like this. but with this method, no map or flight summaries will automatically come up either, which can be annoying

There is a way, or at least there has been one in the past. For one-offs you can add something to the URL. I think the solution I used added that URL modifier to the browser's default search. For my personal stuff I'm trying to use mozilla and duck duck go, they make it easier to opt out.

You can create a custom search engine in your browser called {google:baseURL}/search?udm=14&q=%s This will almost give you the old google back, by enforcing web search, without any AI, widgets, ads and what have you. Looks a bit like mid 2000s Google.

Under Chrome it's Settings --> Search Engine --> Manage search engines and site search. Then there's a button dor adding new custom engines. It wants three entries: Name: pick what you like, i called it "udm14" Abbreviation: pick again what you like URL: this is where you copy the link

I switched to Ecosia as my default search engine to avoid the AI. In the UK it's still using either Google or Bing indexes (you can choose) but you can opt out of the automatic AI response.

You also used to be able to to block it by inserting the word "fucking" into every question you asked google, but they seem to have fixed that now

In my experience, Gemini has also been surprisingly bad compared to the alternatives. They all hallucinate, but Gemini seems to ignore my instructions almost entirely.

There are various ways to have this happen automatically depending on device / browser by updating the search string
