NEW: Growing fears of food shortages on USS Tripoli & other US ships in the Middle East. This photo is the kind of meals now being served. It was sent by a sailor to her family. Families are now trying to send food parcels to the ships. Full story 👉 www.usatoday.com/story/news/p...

Especially interesting to compare these two things because both are morally good things to do. It is good to leave Afghanistan, and it is also good to starve the pieces of shit who invaded Afghanistan the next time they try to invade a country on the other side of the world.

As someone on record for thinking Biden did a bad job of doing a smart thing in extracting from Afghanistan, it is still no where near the fuckup that this war has been but the media sure isn't framing things that way

I know this is sacrilege on Bluesky, but ... why are we attacking Jake here for explaining ... the way the White House should be operating ... as opposed to what happened in Turkey?

OK, this is just proving my point. People here get off on this. Go look at what that account's "broader context" is. I don't see how the "broader context" you're discussing — about Biden — has anything to do with his point here, which is that the president shouldn't use the media as decoys.

i mean i know not really your point, but having worked the july+august 2021 Kabul evac the evac was a genuine disastrous clusterfuck that could have and should have been handled significantly better, but the people who complained were mostly just mad that we admitted defeat

Biden's biggest mistake was attempting a major civilian evac in the first place. There probably wasn't enough time to adequately plan it out when he took office in January, and there sure as hell wasn't time to put it together in August.

Those of us "in the biz" were aware of this as far back as Jan '21. The Doha Agreement was Feb '20. The first flight out of Afghanistan was like July 28, 2021 (I was there when it arrived). They planned for ~1-2 flights a week for 6 months, which everyone on the ground knew was ridiculous

Curious since you were "in the biz" as it were, was the general assumption that the Afghan Gov/Army wouldn't collapse as fast as it did? Or did everyone on the ground know that as soon as the US confirmed it was out things would collapse basically overnight?

Most carrier battle groups when I was in were deployed 6 months, before returning to home port. but we spent a significant time in the gulf Iran Hostage Crisis - 144 days on station (Nimitz) Escorting Kuwaiti tankers (1987) 108 days on station. Over 250 days deployed is one thing (1/2)

but going over 250 days deployed puts us into WW2 battle group territory. Unsure if that is "on station" or not. But if they aren't getting personal supplies, that implies they aren't getting essential stores either, a logistical breakdown, and our military runs on logistics. 2/2

Not to worry. As long as Hegseth gives them meds for low Ts- it’s ok. They won’t even think about rancid water and food. All they would want to focus on is dropping 50 one finger push-ups every 10 minutes.

Unfortunately they will probably blame the Captain of the Lincoln for failure to provide adequate leadership, when the real leadership void is at the top of the Department of Defense - and in the white house.

Who would have thought that you had to feed the troops? Isn't there a whole-ass group of people whose only job it is to make sure these personnel get fed? Rotated out? Discouraged from mutiny caused by a lack of basic human needs?

Sure us curious, ain’t it? And you know, once it’s all over they’ll all be scrambling to claim they were hard hitting and did their jobs.

I think it’s more accurate that T pulled the Bandaid on Afghanistan (he started the countdown clock) and Biden had to deal with it. Trump owns the ‘deal’ he made knowing full well he was leaving an impossible task for the next administration.

If Republicans do something bad but Democrats don't, to the "fair and balanced" news media that means they would be unfair for criticizing Republicans for something they can't criticize Democrats for. Hence they don't criticize Republicans.
