The administration dismantling NCAR is scientific vandalism, much like the Taliban demolishing cultural artifacts. www.theguardian.com/world/2001/m...

They’re not even pretending that it’s for any kind of legitimate reason. Instead, they’re trying to dismantle NCAR to suppress knowledge.

That is awful. I had computer time on their Cray-1 when I was in grad school, even helped debug the Fortran compiler. (I was modeling X-ray binary star systems)

Normal star with a compact (dwarf, neutron star, black hole) companion. Gas flows down onto the compact companion, shocks form, gas heats up, emits X-rays. The model calculated what the resultant spectrum would look like as the X-rays excited the surrounding gas. Lots of atomic physics.
