60% drop in reviews if people even smell AI on your game - full supports the investors, developers, and publishers that took a hard "no gen-AI" stance, despite grifters' proclamations that they were "going to be left behind".

It's hard to get excited about a game that outsources some of it's production to the torment nexus. Even games that look to be made by a single dev in the global south and clearly a passion project gets messy when they use ai to supplement a lack of resources or expertise.

I don't think this data quite shows that. It could also be explained by games made using AI just being worse. I'd be very interested to see A/B testing of "has a disclosure" or "doesn't" for the exact same game. I think your conclusion is overall the right one, mind.

another factor to consider is that if I see a game openly saying it uses Ai, I don't even give it the time of day and immedaitely set it to block and ignore so it doesn't show up on my page anymore so there's prolly a lot of people that can't even leave reviews because of that

A very interesting article. The discussion at the end is intriguing in the context of the topline conclusion: even arguably benign use of AI (as an aid to coding, especially for inexperienced developers, for example) becomes a problem because of the toxicity of the abuse of the technology.

There is no benign use of LLMs (so-called AIs) when it's all based on copyright theft and abusive resources usage (energy, water, hardware)

That's an easy line when it comes to using AI for "art". I'm not so sure for coding - especially when it comes to resource usage in the context of gaming. There's a willing refusal to consider the environmental impact of game engines, cloud gaming and so on. 1/2

2/2 An indy dev using AI to help code a point-and-click adventure game might be penalised over a major AAA studio making a 120fps streaming game without AI. But the latter will likely have a far greater footprint even on a per-player basis. Not to mention being more exploitative of employees.

It's slop. Gen AI was used in the most recent Call of Duty game and from what I heard the game ended with a literal Skibidi Toilet boss. AI right now isn't a tool. It's just a over bloated unoptimized piece of software that can and will confidently lie to you. AI broke Windows 11 countless times.

Woah, same team. I took your original reply to mean people don't want low quality things (which is also true), not necessarily that all genAi is slop. My original reply was just expanding on that it's more than just a quality thing, people oppose the other issues with genAi as well

My favorite quote is this one: "Overall, our data suggests that for low-quality games, AI makes no difference. But for high-potential games, the "AI Stigma" is real and severely punishes developers who otherwise would have succeeded."

There is a line Chuck Sonnenberg repeated from when he was a teacher dealing with a plagarised paper - "I'm not judging it based what's on the paper, I'm judging it by what you did." I always followed that mindset when it comes to AI.

honestly this is emboldening. REPEATEDLY I've seen commentaries how "no one cares about it, people still buy it anyway" bla bla ... And yet, the numbers paint a different story every time.

Unfortunately, no... they won't. They have invested TRILLIONS into a theoretical framework that isn't returning on investment, so now the only option they see is to double down and force feed it to everyone to create the illusion of success. This is an excellent case study on sunken cost fallacy.

Shout out to all the indie game fans that have standards. You guys rock. I feel like as a developer I pretty much can't make a statement strong enough against the use of AI. 🔥🤖🔥

I will check the Steam forums for a game if there's no disclosure but it seems off, and there's often already a thread asking & some chump in the replies screaming "ugh bandwagon crusade" and some other person saying "if there's no disclosure obviously there's no ai" which is demonstrably false

Unfortunately, this is only based of games with AI disclosures versus the ones that don't. I expect this will just push people to not disclose, instead of not using AI. Only Steam requires a disclosure and there is no penalty for failing to disclose (see The Alters or E33) 😕
