Unity just is not stable enough as a business or a company to rely on it for developing multi-year projects.

Posted by @deanhall.bsky.social on reddit, anyone using #Unity needs to take a serious look at what is going on. This is a direct threat to hundreds (thousands?) of studios and tens of thousands of indie developers with games built on Unity. www.reddit.com/r/gamedev/co...

But what is the alternative? As others have said, Godot is wonderful, but we're all waiting for feature parity (and preferably for some third-party fan favourites like CSG tools and animancer to be ported too). Unreal meanwhile is... Unreal. There isn't much choice in the engine market.

Unreal is great, but since it has so many templates it ends up putting devs in a position where they rely on them and end up making games that all look and feel identical. It’s also somewhat bloated and full of experimental features that aren’t really optimized

Of the five accounts listed in the thread it sounds like three of them may be real violations of the TOS? People shouldn't be using their work accounts for personal projects. The last two examples definitely look like overreach by Unity based on the info in the thread.

My interpretation of two of those (the third being the contractor given one while working there) was they are employees who have a personal account for personal work/projects outside of the remit of the company and have a Unity Pro one within the company and Unity is just using email address as ID.

the moment Godots on par with or better than Unity theyre gonna be filing for Bankruptcy and I know it I love unity, I use it for my Avis but HOLY SHIT I HATE THEM AS A CORP SO MUCH

It's sad to see them repeatedly shoot themselves in the foot like this. So many great games use Unity, and brings a lot of brand value. Only to be tied up in an Adobe esque licensing witch hunt, more than often unwarranted and embarrassing.

Godot is a lot better than folks might realize, and the C# experience is terrific. We try to provide a little happy place for people to talk about Godot and C#. Actually owning your game is a feeling nothing comes close to.

Chickensoft is a volunteer-run community that makes and maintains #oss packages to expedite your #godot + #csharp #gamedev experience. mentioning since #Unity is doing licensing things again… your #indiedev experience can be well-supported by wonderful people and state-of-the-art tools 💛

I question the legality of that data scraping, especially if they do it like that worldwide - so just saying if a studio from an EU country gets stuff like this ...
