Arc Raiders did pay the voice actors, the AI gen is just to add more lines of dialogue or words beyond what the VAs recorded with their consent. It still straddles a line and I think that sucks too but they didn't use entirely stolen AI content like Sandfall did

Maybe, probably, yeah I can never find a firm answer on whether there's royalties, that matters a lot. Either way it's an objectively bad idea while this shit's totally unregulated so I'm in agreement lol, but it is fundamentally different from E33. basically TTS (Arc Raiders) vs genAI (E33)

Anything that uses AI is using stolen content, because even if they feed content they paid for into the model, it was built using stolen content in the first place. The industry has said repeatedly that actually paying for training data would bankrupt them.

The usage of AI feels like a complete betrayal of the game's themes and messaging. I'm sure some of the team cared about the game but all I can think is they didn't really believe in their work.

I'm guessing it went like this: IGA did zero research as they don't care about AI in the slighest Someone sent them a TikTok video of the latest trendy discourse (targeting E33 because it's famous = more views for videos) IGA realizes it's indeed trendy and hops on More views for IGA too! Win!!

If you read the article you'd know that the dev lied to the the people running the show about using GenAI, and then the dev brought it up the day of the award show Your comment is just assuming the worst on the part of the event team, when the dev is at fault

I feel sorry for the genuine talent at Sandfall who were unaware of this crap happening under their noses and are now associated with this. Sure it’s easy to point blame at Sandfall, but I personally point equal blame to the techbros for poisoning the industry with this crap.

They said as much like 6 months back, not a blurb back then. They win the awards, humiliate the AAAs out there, suddenly there are stories everywhere and 'they were hiding it' all fueled by these suck-up sites. It's only a conspiracy, if they aren't out to get you.

Different beast my friend. Current use of the word ai is still incorrect but the vast majority of folk are referring to the use of generative models for art assets. Which really shouldn't be used period.

Congratulations for buying in to the tech Bros obfuscation as to what exactly AI is. The complex code that determines NPC function in a game is not the AI that is currently being pushed. They are two completely different beasts.

BASICALLY 👏 They used AI for a temporary newspaper texture back in 2022 and forgot to swap it out with the real one their artist did before they shipped the game. It was patched out like 5 days after release. Most of us never even saw it. There is ZERO AI in the final product.

It had been public knowledge for SIX MONTHS that AI placeholders were used. That means SixOneIndie either: A) failed to conduct basic research on a high profile nominee. B) ignored the available info on it until it was publicly inconvenient. or C) did not take their own rules seriously enough.

Still, the award has a no gen"AI" during development rule, they submitted the game despite having used gen"AI" during development. Irregardless of justified criticism of the awards and their BTS, rescinding the awards is in line with the rules and Sandfall deliberately lied about it beforehand.

"There's just a little genAI in it you can't throw the whole game out over that" Yes I the fuck can. I'm not eating around a dead cockroach in food and I'm not tolerating any amount of genAI in something I watch read or play. Zero tolerance is the only way to stop this shit from spreading.

Leave the creatives using tools they want. You believe it’s one click and that’s it. You are so far of the the truth. Otherwise use yourself a typewriter and not word. Stop saying which tools we have to use. You already done that when photoshop was there.

They should never have been nominated for an indie game of the year award anyway. They had a million+ budget and a team of 30+ people working on it. Indie games have like seven people max and less than half E33's budget. E33 wasn't a AAA game or an Indie game, it's a AA game.

If you pay 10 people a half-decent salary for 3+ years your budget is easily going to surpass 1 million+. Budget has nothing to do with whether a game is indie or not.

It's true that they happened to have *a lot of money*, because of how successful Hollow Knight was, but that's a very different thing from a game produced by a corporation with investment having a budget

If you say so, I'm more than happy to call them AA or even A games. If independence from a publisher is all it takes then by that definition Sony has developed indie games. They're independent from other publishers and have developed their own games in the past.

There shouldn't be a "best indie game", it's usually used to create two levels that allow them to nominate less "indie" games to the big awards. Just like what the Oscar do to animated movies.
